View Full Version : Dead Space...just plain creepy!

I have to say that I just recently heard about this game but it sounded like it would be good since I love good immersive single player games. So far, Dead Space has not let me down. I am only part way through the second chapter at this point, but this game has the creep factor down pat. Sure, a lot of the actual scares are of the "Boo I just broke through the wall after traveling through the air vents" variety, but these are done well. The best thing so far is the great use of music and lighting that really conveys a sense of dread. Not cheap and cheesy like Doom 3 was. I highly recommend it!

Good to know. I'm looking forward to this game. Plus the fact that you found Doom 3 "cheap and cheesy" means that in at least that we have similar taste.
Watching videos, at least you can use your light AND gun at the same time. I've been rolling this over in my head, Saints Row 2, or Disgaea 3. Still haven't decided yet, heh. :(

Heh yeah. Don't get me wrong, that whole jump out and scare you thing still exists in Dead Space, but at least it makes a lot more sense. In Doom 3, there were literally walls that just went down to have a scary monster behind them. Very predictable. It is established early in Dead Space that the monsters have frequently used the ventilation system to move around, and like any good space ship, there are lots of ventilation ducts...most of which never have anything happen with them....but every one a potential point of entry! Of course, some monsters are capable of just battering down a wall or door to get closer to you, but you will have to see them for yourself!
The video reviews I've watched show me a game that had an atmosphere in mind and totally nailed it. Looks really good.

Great game. I'm nearing Chapter 3 on my PS3. I really enjoy the presentation of this game - the no HUD and holograms are just excellent.
I'm slowly moving this game to the must-buy category.

This game is great, I'm on chapter 3 now. It reminds me about all the good things about Doom 3. I love the minimalist approach to the hud.

Took my time last night if all is planned its ~1 hour per chapter at 12 chapters = 12 hours.
Gotta say though im quiet enjoying this, glad I got it for the 360 vs PC though. Seems like the controls would be odd for the PC since there are so many combo buttons, and it just feels proper for a console title more.
Might of cheated already though and got an elite suit ;) Was a DL from Xbox live, and already selected it... oops. Not sure what it all changes but it looks cool. So probably actually just start over, so im not wasting ammo figuring out the fighting system, nor health packs.
Wow I wish I knew about the elite suit earlier. I wouldn't have wasted money on the level 2 and 3 suits. I could have used it for ammo instead.

Yes there is 2 suits... An elite that is free via Xbox Live, its a lvl 5 suit so all inventory is unlocked. Its pretty slick looking, little too bright IMO for the area. But there is also a Scorpion suit that is red, but costs Xbox Live Points, think 150-200, can't remember.
If it doesn't affect anything else but looks and storage im all for it :) Saves me some money in the end hehe.

Here's my post on it from the PC thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=582152):
Alright, 5hrs later, I've cleared the first four levels. The verdict: scary, visceral, not easy on the nerves. The graphics are decent enough and it has its moments- it must look really great as a console game. I'm running every setting maxed at 19x12 and the frames don't dip below 100fps. 3.39Gb install. Controls: Sure, they're not really great, its a console port, but theres no way I'd use my 360 ctrl'er in it, although it is supported. Instead of the fluid fps mouse motion you're used to, I kinda play 'connect the dots' with the mouse, like drawing a constellation to aim. Hey it works pretty well after a bit, I'm pretty fast now. The rag-doll physics are horrid. Nothing is more scary after slaughtering a handful of disgusting creatures than to bump a dead one with your foot and have it freak out like its being pumped with 20K volts. The sound is great; it provides a consistently creepy atmosphere and is done really well, imo. Storyline: Not really drawing me in or making me feel for the characters or care if they even live, although its nice to know you're not completely alone on the ship- seriously it can be comforting. Plot-wise, meh, it gets the job done but I'm only half paying attention. Looking in the game folder reveals twelve missions; at this exploratory pace thats 15hrs on Medium Difficulty.
The game reminds me of Prey and Doom 3, but not as good. Still, go buy it.
Look at the blood!

I know your pretty far into it. How are you enjoying it? And what weapons do you feel work better than others?
The Elite Suit gives you 10% armor so it helps reduce damage slightly. I'm on chapter 10 now and I think the best guns are probably the Plasma Cutter and the Line Gun. The Pulse Rifle is good in certain situations like in certain boss fights. The Contact Gun is good for tough opponents because it's pretty powerful, but each ammo pickup for it only gives you 1 ammo so use it only for tough opponents. It's one of those weapons that you charge up before firing. The Ripper is pretty useless imo because it has a very short range. I haven't tried the flamethrower or force gun yet.

The control issue on the PC version has been solved. Supposedly, the game forces vsynch out of the box, which makes the controls less-than-sharp. Disabling software vsynch has made things much easier for a lot of players.

Yeah, I never run v-sync, like I said my frame rate doesn't drop below 100. I use the plasma cutter, line gun and pulse rifle. The ripper was novel, but useless. The flamethrower looks awesome in action, but its a brute force attack and chews ammo.

That sucks no Suit upgrade :(. I know I've maxed out my slots on my suit a couple times and made me run back and free up some slots. Can't see how running on a smaller suit is good, sure it adds a little more to the game I guess not filling up inventory and carrying ONLY what you need but damn, I go insane when my inventory fills up at LVL 5.
Have to agree a little part on the darkness. Day time its not fully the same, but at least im not looking over my shoulder all the time to see if someones standing behind me :)
Daytime isn't so much a problem but you have to play with headphones to fully enjoy it. The game is creepy on Chapter 10 I was pretty frantic at one point almost as if I were going to die in real life lol. I'm on Chapter 12 now and I might not play the game today. It really takes a lot out of you.

Aye I play with my headphones on... so good that way, man didn't know what I was missing til I got some good ones just a month ago.

EA really nailed this game, I beat it the day before yesterday and it was white knuckle action to the bitter end! The immersion factor is great, the story kept my interest the whole way, the enemies always kept me on my toes, the gore was awesome, sound was fantastic, and the pacing was perfect...the only gripes I had with the game were the obligatory puzzles, kinda easy bosses, and the turret gameplay.
Definitely worth a play through, I was going to trade it in to get Fable 2 but I couldn't bring myself to do it! It's just too good of a game to leave my collection!

I'm on lvl 7 Hard mode and I keep running out of ammo and having to go back to the store to get more. :/
I thought I was pro when I saved up about 300 rounds for the mineral cutter, but then after chapter 5, things went through the roof and enemies started coming in rounds of 4 at a time. I'm doing "one tool", and might go through again on impossible/insane to get all upgrades ACH.
If there is a game that can hook the horror fan out of you, it's this game... The creepiness eats through FEAR. You can be a god at FEAR just by mastering the borrowed MP -bullet time.. But no such freebie here. Something else I realized is, unlike other horror games, you WILL not be lost. Doors open specifically and get locked specifically to guide you where u need to be. :/ That plus the little blue navigation arrow u can use with RS-click. -possible spoiler?- Enemies don't randomly respawn. Which kills the scare factor but ups your survival. ... I backtrack just to sell stuff to open up the inventory bc I know there aren't things back there if I killed them all. If they did respawn, the scare would be more intense, but my 1 hour per lvl would turn into like...3.

Well thats good to know... sell everything that you don't need/will be using at the end and upgrade as much as possible. So suits/upgrades on guns won't carry over? Hope those will since thats what it sounded like from previous to "max" everything out, its an unlock able achievement I know of.

I'm up to chapter6 now, and must say this is probably my favorite game of the year. This brings back the resident evil feel, and I mean the 'horror' RE1-3 games, not RE4 or above since from then on it turned into more of an action game and less of a horror game.
These same guys who worked on Dead Space should be the ones working on future Resident Evil titles... but Capcom doesn't want that apparently, they want terrible voice acting with shoot em up action instead. Which is fun in its own way but after RE3 the series just lost its 'survival horror' feel.
For some reason PC controls turned out to be much better for me... tried the controller then keyboard (can use both at same time even) and it seemed much easier with keyboard/mouse. Didn't expect that.

FPS would be odd for this game. There are the little things that go on the floor and can attack you from behind. I'd be a little scared if I'm walking along and I just start losing health without reason and turning around yields no cause. But then again that game has me "a lot" scared.

really.. i am not finding this game to be that scary. not sure why. it definitely is creepy and gross, and sometimes i do jump, but i just dont find it to be that scary. i feel like doom 3, although NOT a better game, was scarier. even with the brightness all the way down the game just doesnt seem dark enough. note, i am also play the pc version.
also, this game really makes me nauseous. not the blood and gore and nastiness, but instead the movements. the only time video games every really make me nauseous is if i am watching someone as play and the are looking around all crazy like. but really, idk, i max out with this game after about an hour. its probably due to the crapy port over of controls
nightelph
11-07-08, 06:12 AM
Also on the pc version, here. The controls do suck.
^I don't know what your definition of scary is, but if you're jumping a bit..
Heres a couple of my favorite scary moments:
1. I went down a hall and saw a human corpse at an intersection. Approaching it cautiously, I took off the head and moved on. Later when I returned the corpse was there, but in a different position; kinda piled up on itself. Again I walked slowly towards it and took a leg off, kept walking and Holy Crap! A monster springs up from under it! It was using it as cover!
2. Level 9; the new fast moving creature thats introduced. I killed three at once when they ran at me, which was intense to say the least. I take two steps and one of the bodies attacks me again! It was playing dead! Thats the first time in the game I actually yelled out AHH!
phil178821
11-07-08, 07:58 AM
idk.. i do not consider the periodic jump much of anything. for instance, if my brother hides around the corner and jumps out on me, i will be startled, however, i would not call him scary.
jumps arent all that frequent really either. i guess i just dont find myself walking around thinking of all the possible messed up stuff that can happen and getting scared..
also, from reviews i read, it was said that the sound in the game was going to be awesome, really setting the atmosphere. while somethings are chilling, i am really not that impressed. for some reason, although i cannot say for sure sincei havent played the game in years, i feel like doom 3 was scarier and creepier.
ultimately, i like the game a lot (besides the controls) but the scariness just isnt completely there. maybe if the aliens maintained more human character (like zombies, which really scare me lol) then i would be more afraid.
although the few times you see humans in the game, or what appear to still be human, it is quite creepy. like the one guy bangin his head on the wall.

oh and yeah.. i think what really gets me is the brightness.. thinking about it, the scariest parts are when the lights go out on you. i always freak out at those points and aim my gun (mounted flashlight) around, waiting for the attack but it doesn't always seem to come. if i remember correctly, sometimes they appear once the lights turn back on. so i think a darker game would be more fear instilling. :)

Did you play Silent Hill: Homecoming? Came out a month or so ago.
Oh I forgot about this, going to check it if I have time.. been playing multiple new games at once.

I beat Dead Space!! Freaking awesome. The last few levels were killer. Perhaps because this story/theme has been beaten to death, the storyline didn't suck me in- but the gameplay did!

Yeah. I mean, honestly, this game on PC just has that "CONSOLE" feel. I started playing the game.. it's good, but it really needs a bit more polish for the PC side.
you can bet that you'll be having that same complaint on almost every game, save perhaps those made by blizzard and valve...............for the foreseeable future. nothing is going to turn the tide back towards pc games anytime soon. it's a laptop for work/console for games world.

Usually it also pi**es me off when every single PC game is a console port except for 1 or 2 games.

In a dev interview they said the religion storyline came after the premise/gameplay ideas were in place. Check out this thread on conceptart.org (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=141606) for some concepts made by one of the artists who worked on the game "from day one"!

For those big game companies it's easy to choose greed right now, but that won't be going on forever. There will be some changes and PC gaming will pick up again somewhat, but that won't be for another few years.

That must be one of the new skins out for it. My guess is the astronout one... I'd have to check but that does look bad ass.

So no one knows what this elusive Rig is? It's not the Lvl 6 Rig is it?

I don't think its the lvl 6 rig but it doesn't look like the ps3/360 freebie rigs either. I think its 3rd party. If I get the chance I'll upload a pic of a lvl6 rig.
