View Full Version : Green dots, even on Widows desktop

Just reinstalled Windows and I get green dots on pictures and on flash videos. It is like the dead pixel but it is moving with the picture.
Card is 8800GT 512 MB. It is not overclocked at the least and the idle temp is 58. Haven't tried games yet, but am afraid? Any ideas?
Doesn't sound good. Using the newest drivers from nvidia website? Are these dots present in the bios?
If the dots only appear in Windows and not at the BIOS/during POST then the issue is to do with Windows drivers/settings and I'd try safe mode.
If not, it's a lower-level issue with the card. I'd aim a fan at it, make sure it's seated right and see how you get on.

*edit*
The strange thing is... I just ran 3d Mark 2005 and there are no green dots that I can notice... but right now I can see one on my avatar. Also I have run WoW and there are a lot of them on intro screen (my gaming card is spent)
Temps under 3d Mark are max 80. Most around 78.

Don't know if you can see them but there should be a few around login fields (building to the right of the login field)

I see nothing, can you point them out using paint?

i think i see them around your name in the bottom left hand corner right? those temps are really high bro why dont you try reseating the heatsink and cranking up the fan on it?

i've blown that screenshot up in paint and can't see what looks like an "off" green pixel anywhere, including anywhere around your login name...
Have you tried David's suggestion? See if you can recreate any of the effect you're describing in safe-mode.
Does a screenshot take what should be there, or what is there?
If I run a screenshot with my monitor off for example, I don't get a black screen.
Any green dots I can see on that image look like JPEG compression artifacts.

I'd definetly say it's a heat issue, even the idle temps are very high for an 8800gt, I'd pop that heatsink off and reseat it and make sure you don't have a weak fan because at 80c it should be running at full throttle but as long as your not getting green dots or lines during post or after sitting at your bios screen for 10 min then your card isn't fried YET but it won't be long before the memory fries and thats always the 1st to go when it comes to overheating, as mentioned before pull the side panel off and stick a fan blowing in there and see if the dots go away.

Right.
Hitting the print screen key will not reflect any flaws coming from a faulty display (i.e. stuck or dead pixels), nor any effects the display hardware is generating from the original image (hue/contrast/brightness adjustments).
I'm pretty sure the print screen key WILL pick up artifacts/snowing that results from overheated/overclocked video cards (how else would the guides showing what they are have the screenshots?).
This leads me to believe that the OP's screenshot, on which I cannot see any obviously awry green pixels, indicates either something going awry in the display and/or cable to the video card.
Melhisedek, you might try taking a screenshot, optionally trimming it down for filesize, then try saving in paint as PNG instead of JPG to reduce the losses on the image - then we can probably confirm with more certainty that we can or can't see what you're seeing.

Damn thing is tricky :) I was sitting in BIOS for like few hours now... try and see if there are any dots... none what so ever. I rebooted to Windows, no dots... Fooled around, no dots. Ran 3D Mark 2005 no dots. Rebooted, dots show up on desktop. Ran 3DMark again, no dots.
Rebooted again and right now... no dots at all... I'm gonna try and see if I can reproduce then tomorrow after work, am pretty tired right now.
Thanks for help guys I appreciate it. Gonna try and reseat the heatsink first of all...

Agreed.

Not so sure. Either it intercepts the screen 'as it should be' before it hits the VGA card or 'as it's rendered' from the VGA card before it hits the monitor. I suspect it's probably the latter but I'm not sure.

Also check monitor connection - are we using DVI or D-Sub here?

It seems to have been monitor... I think cable was loose or something. I can't reproduce the dots no way. But I'm still worried about temps... What should be "normal" temps for the 8800GT?
I have Antec 1200 and it is very well ventilated

Are you using a program to control fan speed? If not, then I highly recommend RivaTuner.

I had this problem with my two 8800gts 512mb... I was thinking about corrupt video memory was occuringm, and green/blue dots would only appear on the dark grey/black textures and nowhere else. I RMA'ed the card, they found nothing wrong with it and when I got it back (I only RMA'ed one as that was the card with the problem) it worked fine. Strange, it really is.

I know what this looks like, had the same issue on a gtx 260 which I RMA'd. It kept getting the freeze>white screen>nv4_disp error in every game/bench. And the green dots in videos. With the fan at 100% and 60's load temps.
The new one they sent me doesn't have any of these issues, except when using any 178.xx drivers it keeps crashing in Crysis/Warhead, but that's a driver problem.
First though, use EVGA Precision or Rivatuner to up the fan speed. By default it's very low, at 30% or 40%, which could very well be the problem. Keeping it below 70C on load is ideal, shouldn't be a problem with 100% fan speed and the Antec 1200 case.

Gee - this is buggin me now! I'm thinking I'm gonna need to bust out ATItool when I get home and induce some artifacts just to resolve this one for myself ^_^.
