I don't know why I bothered to read the Best Buy circular today, but they actually had something interesting in it. They're listing an Asus laptop that has reasonably high specs for $900, the X83Vm-X1 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9050055&type=product&id=1218012612475). At first I didn't believe them when they said it was a "Best Buy exclusive", but sure enough there is no mention of a X83 line on the Asus site (http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=-1).

Does anyone know anything about this model? Could it be one of their other models that has been rebranded for BB? I'm kind of hopping that it is, because while a 9600M with one gig of dedicated ram is tasty, that brown pattern is pretty damn nasty looking... :screwy:

So throw a skin on it and call it a day.

I hate working for Best Buy, but I'll give you some food for thought. Before slamming them on their prices, just know that 90% of the time, you won't see the prices they have from any other place before rebate.

What Best Buy does is, they get manufacturer rebates through various rebate companies, but instead of giving YOU the rebate to process and forcing you to deal with MyRebate, RebateHQ and all those other shady companies; Best Buy takes the rebate amount out of the computer itself so you get an "instant" discount, and then Best Buy files the rebate themselves. It costs Best Buy millions of dollars every term to do this, but it helps customers, helps their traffic and gives them the salesman nudge to get customers to buy extra crap they wouldn't get if they had to "wait" for the sale amount.

Rebate companies try to avoid processing all rebates by having a complicated process system. Think of it like a filter and you're trying to get through. Some do, some get caught in the net and don't get their rebate or even wait 8-10 months for it. Rebate companies are a little gun shy to do that when a multi billion dollar corporation is asking for the rebates though. They have cabinets of attorneys waiting for such fraud to take place.

So no, it might not be a model exclusive in the sense that you can probably get something very similar, custom built from ASUS. But at that price? Not a chance. Not even a slim one.

If you have $800 and want something like that, go to Best Buy and get it before the sale's over. Just tell them, "No" to Geek Squad and "No" to software. Try to use American Express so you get an extended warranty. Is it American Express or something else? Don't remember.

Yes, that is why I want to find out what this laptop is. If it really is an exclusive model, or is being offered at a price that other retailers can't touch, then BB is the place to go. Of course, you have to do some homework to find out if anyone's "sale" really is a deal.

I didn't say I liked it, quite the opposite.

Not to get off topic, and I understand you work for them, but this dowsn't make sense to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but rebate of not:

The list goes on and on. Overpriced beyond belief and profitting on the general public'c complete ignorance.

I was on my way to bb to purchase the HP HDX series notebook.....i was speaking to sales person and asked him does anyone else have anything witht he same specs?uic
I was blown away when he grabbed a ASUS notebook and compared the specs...the asus had a few more options than the HP, The price was better and without all that bloatwae. I purchased the Asus and sped home to fire this thing up...boy was i surprised at the well built notebook that was very fast and to know i save so much money was even a bigger plus. I tried to go online to find some info and couldnt find much on this product...one thing i did find was on Asus website that they have a free...yup i said FREE accidental insurance on their products along with a 2 yr warranty. WOW ...beat that HP.....
Im a very happy camper with this laptop, I cant wait to install some type of game on this thing to see wha it will do as far as performance, the color will grow on you really fast especially knowing that you have a laptop that many dont know much about...If you get a chance purchase this notebook....you wont be sorry....top quality stuff and asus has stole me away as a customer.

That has nothing to do with BB. Maybe you don't realize it, but products have a price/cost based on the manufacturer. I asked my previous boss about it because he's a computer gamer/technician. We had an ATI 3870 on our website for $249.99 and an 8800GT in store for $149.99. He told me, "When the new cards come out, only some of the cards get lowered MSRP and rebates from the manufacturer. Why should we take a loss on PNY or XFX when BFG gives us our money back and lowers the prices themselves?"

It's the same reason if you search Amazon.com, you find a lot of places have those cards for their original prices too. Best Buy doesn't try to shove those cards into people's hands telling them they're the best for the price. At least at our store we don't.

There's a reason Best Buy has such a huge gap on Circuit City who's the #2 retail electronics store in America.

I don't like working for this company, but I hate when people take jabs at products' prices, like it's always Best Buy's fault.

Best Buy does do ridiculous crap with some stuff. $90 for an HDMI cable, $35 for a USB printer cable. Best Buy sells actual laptops and TV's dirt cheap and hopes to make up for the profit loss by selling Geek Squad service and accessories and "protection plans". In my opinion, the only thing worthwhile out of those is the protection plans, and that's only if you actually take advantage of them.

my step son picked up one of the asus g50's at BB ... pretty impressive machine ... almost same specs (little better and 300.00 more, but still very nice machine)

The X83 is better than the G50, the X83 has more cache memory and Video Ram than the G50. besides that everything is the same. THe way things look right now Asus might have the best of the best with this X83.... People will save alot of money with this great buy...
