I use 192kbits/second. 128 makes the high stuff like guitar and cymbal work distort....160 is probably all I need though, I originally used 192 for an overkill factor but I could probably convert them all down to 160 without losing anything....at least not by my beat-up ears anyway.
What about 320,
thats what I'm using right now on my Jukebox. Since space isn't a real big concern right now. Plus I have $80 panasonic headphones.
So is 320 a waste? or would 192 or 160 give me the same quality music?

I don't notice any difference beyond 192 and very little from 160-192. I say go with 192.
To figure out how good MP3s need to be encoded, I would suggest to encode one file that has a good mix of all frequencies (and has stuff in the background that you have to listen for to hear), and then encode it at bit rates from 128 and up. When you start to hear no diffrence, encode them there. Of course, if space is of no concern, then you could always stick them a notch higher, or go for 320 in case you plan on playing them on anything really good.
But for my horrible computer speakers, 128 is fine! :D
