I need some suggestions for a good nVidia card that my motherboard can handle. Presently, I'm running an eVGA 7900GT KO. I believe it just died

see discussion for insight to death http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Components/Video_Cards/Q_23831986.html

my motherboard specs just say 2 PCI-e x16 and 1 PCI-e x4...but cards on Newegg.com have a PCI-e 2.0 option...will these work on my motherboard?

what are the drawbacks/limitations on putting a 2.0 card in a 1.1 slot?

Pci Express 2.0 is completely backwards compatible with 1.0.

i am thinking of getting a eVGA 9800GTX to replace my 7900GT KO

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130386

would it be used to its full potential in my setup, or will the PCI-e 1.1 be a limiting factor?
I guess I don't understand the difference between 1.1 and 2.0

Your current setup will hold it back, but most games will be fine. Here's some examples of what my upgrades yielded, with similar hardware to yours. On an Opteron180 @ 2.8 ghz and radeon x1900xt = 17 fps in Crysis GPU bench at 1680x1050 DX9 High settings. After upgrade to a GTX 260, it went up to 37 fps. After doing a major mobo/cpu/ram upgrade, with an e8400, at stock 3 ghz speed it gave 50 fps.

It'll be slightly less with a 9800. Make sure to get a 9800GTX+ as those are a smaller die and can OC higher as well. You won't be able to play the Crysis games on max settings very well without a CPU upgrade, but everything else is fine.
