So after a clean install I want to be preemptive and safeguard my system from a virsu/spyware attack but have always worried about the system resources these utilities sometimes use. Price is not an issue but I would like a program that is solid but not a resource hog and leaves only a small footprint. I have already installed the following free programs:
Spybot
SpywareBlaster
Ad-Aware Free
Windows Defender (Enabled)
Windows Firewall (Enabled)
I have heard good things about AVG Antivirus and ZoneAlarm do you guys reccomend these?

I use:
AVG (Free Anti virus, effective and small footprint)
Spybot (I love the immunize feature. Great and fixing reg hacks created by virus.)
Malwarebytes (Very good and fixing reg hacks created by virus.)
I recently stopped using:
Adaware (I didn't see it doing much good after SB and MWB)
ZoneAlarm (Too large. Brings many systems to a crawl.)

AVG, SpyBot Search & Destroy, COMODO...pwned.
Yup, another vote for AVG, but consider the Professional version, as it has effective and unobtrusive integrated linkscanner, anti-spyware and rootkit protection.

Instead of having a slew of free stuff, I find it's better just to go with one particular piece of software that's great all around, and can manage everything. (In my case, Kaspersky) But AVG pro is awesome stuff too.
This will eliminate any kind of conflicts between programs.
