This is a service that provides several older, classic PC games, more are continually being added. They are DRM-free and are all compatible with XP and Vista. The prices range from $5.99 to $9.99 and once you buy them, you can download them as many times as you like.

Fallout 1 and 2 are available.

I'm sticking with Gametap, one flat fee and you can play all you want from any computer. Fallout 1+2, Descent 2/3/Freespace too :p

How is that service? How long do you have to wait to get games? Are they downloaded or disc in the mail? How many can you play at once?

Downloaded, and the speeds are pretty good. You can download as many as you want, uhh, you can only play one game at a time, unless you have more than one computer or something..

I like GoG, no DRM is a huge plus. Hopefully they continue to expand the catalog.

DRM free is big plus in my book. The prices are very reasonable as well. I plan to re-buy most of the classics through GoG whenever I have a nostalgic gaming urge.

I've been in the beta for GOG and it's great. No DRM, and I prefer to own the game and not have to use Gametap's bloatware.

Freespace 2 FTW!

Yes. I signed up just for Freespace 2. Now I just have to find a joystick...

Have they updated things for modern computers? Specifically widescreen resolutions? How does it run?

But seriously 5.99 can't be beat.

Not sure on widescreen, I'm on a 4:3 CRT right now. But it does run great in XP for me, as far as I can tell it's just the original game in all it's glory.

I read in PC Gamer that GOG sponsers some user-made mods that have been tested to work with the games that can increase the resolution for some games (Fallout specifically).

Wonder if Hamachi/LAN will still work. That's all I care about.

Are the games yours forever? Meaning is there like a monthly or annual subscription plan that you have to have in order to play purchased games? Also, do you need the gog software to initiate the games (like you need steam to launch css)?

Can you install mods to the games?

please holla back!

You own the games you purchase, forever. No fees, no DRM, and no GOG software required to install or play them. Mods I'm not sure on but I assume they work since they're selling the latest patched version of the games.

Another good old (well, very old) game is Tyrian 2000. That was like the best space shooter for a very long time. I have it on an old hard drive somewhere; still fun to play even today.

Just to confirm, Freespace 2 does run in widescreen. It does look native, so it isn't a stretched version of the game. However, its probably like 1280x720 scaled to 16x10.

The game was made open source a while back and some very cool mods/upgrades were created because of it. The graphics, textures, etc of the original game have been redone. The installer is located here: http://www.fsoinstaller.com/ (must have the original game installed for it to work).

More info here: http://www.hard-light.net/ (be sure to check out the wiki)

Sorry, but I just can't do it.

I mean, loading up these old games would be shellshock, especially considering how antiquated the graphics are.

It's like going back to the old neighborhood where you grew up.

NOOOO!!!!! IT'S CHANGED, IT'S ALL CHANGED!!!!!!! DAM YOU, DAMN YOU ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It would just ruin all those perfect little happy memories I have.

While I understand your sentiment, I'm not having that issue. Fallout is just as awesome as it used to be, and Freespace 2 makes me happy in the pants.
