Would there be a way to have two partitions of winxp w/ one using a card like an 8600gt that is in the secondary slot on my mobo. The first slot would be my 8800gtx.

Ideally I could use the 8800gtx for gaming and the 8600gt for physx processing in one partition, and in the other one use the 8600 which is better for decoding hd to watch blue ray.

Can I have diffrent drivers on each partition?

my mobo is p5q pro
processor is e6600

I will be happy to clarify my question further if anyone is confused.

thanks:)

no because both cards use the same driver for one

2nd i see no point in this an 8800GTX can handle HD content as good as a 8600 card...

you want to cause excessive work just use one OS for both. Your not going to kill your 8800GTX by playing movies on it.

the driver issue makes sense so I guess there is no way. *frowny face*

I was just hoping because there are such crazy things happening with being able to have different cards on the same mobo like with using a gpu as a physx card.

from what I read the lower end cards like the 8400 and I think the 8600 have better decoding and take nearly 100% of the work from the processor. This can not be said for the 8800gtx.

I am not sure if the 8600 is any better than the 8800 for blue ray but I was under the impression that it was. I could be wrong. I do know for a fact that the 8800gtx does not have the full decoding capabilities of some of the lower end cards.

So will an e6600 and an 8800gtx be fine for blue ray, and I should not worry?

Thanks for your help so far =)

If I recall correctly, the 8800 GTX is a G80. I did read that hardware acceleration on G80 was not as good as the following 8 series (G84, G86, etc.). However, I'm pretty certain you'll play Blu-ray just fine on an E6600.

Alright as long as it will work fine. The main reason I ask is because I will be getting an 8600 from a friend because he will be upgrading soon and I offered to buy it. I plan to use the 8600 in a dedicated htpc in the future, and more immediately as a physx processor for my gaming rig.

Has anyone used an 8800gtx and an e6600 around hear?

I just will not be able to stand any stuttering at all really. It would annoy the _____ out of me.

i use my 8800 GTX and Q6600 (not e6600) at 3.2ghz and watch a lot of 1080p content (mostly .mkv h264 encoded bluray/hddvds)

if i use FFDshow, there is constant "slow down/speed up", a phenomenon that's frustrating to say the least. the movie will gasp for the proper framerate, which causes it to slow down, then speed up to correct itself in correlation to the movie time

i bought CoreAVC and since this codec uses hardware acceleration with 3DGPU's, i have absolutely no problems watching 1080p movies now

CoreAVC does not use hardware acceleration.

I guess my question is...

With proper software will my 8800gtx be able to provide me with a smooth stutter/slowdown-free blue-ray experience?

You'll find a lot of differing opinions. Do you have that system set up already? Your best bet is to see for yourself.

If it isn't and you want to be absolutely certain, just buy CoreAVC. This is not from personal experience, but I've read a lot about people playing 1080p H.264 content stutter free on old Pentium 4 CPUs with that codec.

the system is not set up yet. I am just nervous lol

yes

i am using a 7600GT stock with an e4400 @ 3Ghz and i can play downloaded content, so far upto 26MB bitrate fine, the new nvidia drivers take some load off even with a 7600, so my cpu usage hits around 30-70% (remeber this is an e4400 much slower C2D based on allendale, not a true c2d)

i have yet to try a retail BR disk as i don't have a drive yet but all downloaded plays fine, 720/1080

I did use CoreAVC myself since it is multithreaded, most all other codecs are not and only use a single core, if it wasnt for CoreAVC i would likely be buying a new CPU.

Programs like PowerDVD do hardware acceleration of support formats (retail disks and such)

So it sounds like with proper software I should not have a problem at all

thanks

nope, that you shouldnt!

i use CoreAVC for downloaded content and media player regualr one (sometimes i use media player classic)

and i use PowerDVD 8 for DVD's.
