View Full Version : Very weird increase in temperature CPU.

Okay. Well I finally lapped my heatsink yesterday and I was very excited to see that at stock speed my cpu temperature was about 41'c at load! 50cfm fan... Anyway I started to overclock it. This is what I noticed
10.5*153 (1.800v) = 1607mhz = 43'c Load
10.5*155 (1.825v) = 1628mhz = 43'c Load
10.5*156 (1.850v) = 1638mhz = 46'c Load
Well here is the problem. I don't understand how my cpu temperature could increase 3'c becaue of 10mhz and .025v. I have to use 1.850v to have ti run stable at 1638mhz. The chip is recognized as an XP2000+. I have tried 157*10.5 and it ran prime for about 15 minutes than crashed. I Think it was probably due to heat. Does anyone know why my temperature went up so high with only a slight increase in voltage and speed?
Slick.
How are you getting your temp. readings? Unless you are getting them with a external device just use them as a guide. The raise in voltage will cause your cpu to run hotter. This is why people are using watercooling to cool there overclocked rigs. There will come a point where there is too much heat for you to overclock higher.

I know that. I was just referring to the fact that there was a 3'c change in temperature with such a small increase in speed and voltage, it doesn't make too much sense to me...

look at the whole picture because the insocket temp probes are not that accurate. Look you raised you volts up each step you showed but the temp only went up the last step. How long did you run whatever program you ran to get your load temp at each step? Did the temp in your room go up? there are several factors that can effect the temp your cpu is running at.

In all cases Prime 95 was run for approximately 90minutes in the same spot in my house right after each other... Quite weird. It's interesting tho I have placed a 40cfm fan above the heatink blwing into the heatsink and my temperature had dropped 4'C!!! I am going to try to Jimmy something up so I have keep the fan there..

The same thing happened to me. I am not overclocked but my temps just raised 5C since a couple days ago and I did not do anything. Maybe the paste wore out or something? I do not have ASII I have generic
BTW my temps at idle were 35C and now are 40C. Yikes! What can I do besides water
Dust out the hsf lately?
Winter clothes, lower humidity and the furnace running make alot more dust than you might think.
Unless you've used the the stock heatsink and their thermal pad for over a year the silicone has dried and its crushed and layed to the side of the core Mike.
Hows the airflow in the case? Its winter and maybe your parents turned on the heat?

Well right now my system isn't in a case at all.. It is sitting outside the case on top of the box. I am running tests on it, I want to see how fast I can get it to go.. I want to run a voltmod but I have to wait to get some POTS. The tests were run right after each other, and I don't see how it would change that much in such a short period of time, seems kind of weird. But it looks like m CPU cieling is right around 1650ish or so... at 1.850 volts so it's at it's max stable point at 1638. I guess that could be why there was such an increase in temp. I don't know.

Yup that small increase in voltage can increase you temps that much. It used to be bigger changes in the older CPUs so dont worry about it too much. Just improve your cooling & clock it some more:D
Your motherboard is grounded onto a steel/alluminum tray right? If not it can be killed easily..

Trust me its the voltage! My 1.2 tbird does that when I move the voltage. It does it with predictability.

I am using a Volcano 6cu and some cheap Antec paste
I think the airflow is pretty good. I have a 92mm Sunon 38cfm intake and 1 generic 80mm intake on the side that came with the case and 1 Enermax 80mm exhaust. Now I have the front bezel and the side panel off (working on window mod:) ) Now my temps are back down to 35C but thats idle. I am not overclocked and it is only a 900 Duron
