i usually know the answer when it comes to networking

but, i have seemed to stump myself

i have a 4 port linksys router already

i'm thinking about purchasing the Linksys wireless access point from someone at a really great price

now, all that is needed to hook it up is a wireless Ethernet card in each comp

thats great, but i still want routing capabilities

i am trying to think of a way to hook the router up in the configuration

i know linksys makes a wireless access point with built in router and 10\100 switch, but its too expensive and like i said i can get a really good deal on just the linksys access point

the way i see it, i still leave my setup the way it is

dsl line coming into the router WAN port

then, connect the uplink port on the router to the uplink port on the wireless access point.

i know that the comps still connected by cable to the router still get routed,

but what i don't know about is do the comps using the wireless system still get routed?

or is the hook up just like taking an extra switch and hooking it to the router through the uplink and everything is the same, just more ports?

i still nedd to be able to assign static ip's to the comps on the wireless system

or do you connect the wireless access point to a regular port on the router, that makes more since to me

It should; I have been thinking about the same setup for my network; I should have a laptop again soon and I'd like to be able to take it out in the yard in nice weather and still surf, etc.

The wireless access point acts just like a hub. I have a d-link with the routing and I had to use a crossover cable to connect it into my hub, but that is what you would have to do if you added another hub (unless it has an uplink port).

I think the plain access points will use a regular patch cable to connect to your hub/router.

thx poly, i was hoping i would hear from you, since i believe you know more about networking than most people here

i talked to my DAD about it, and he told me that i was right about connecting the wireless access point to a port on the router, no a uplink

he said it would work using the uplink, but the routing wouldn't work like i want it too

he did the WIFI system for DELL

thx for the help

When I said uplink port, I was talking about the one on the wireless access point. An uplink port on an access point or hub (not router) just has the send and recieve pins swapped, like a crossover cable, but on a router the uplink has all the software work being a gateway and stuff.

Since you're getting a linksys it's prolly the WAP11. That one all you need to do is plug it into the port on your router or hub.

Just plug it in and go. Configure the AP to get an IP from the router, or you should be able to set a static IP address.

The D-Link will fit in well with your network, the other poster was correct in saying that you connect the AP to a standard port. There should be no need to use the uplink port on the router.

Cheers and welcome to wireless. Let us know what your range is like.
