I'm looking for a good 17" or 19" monitor for US$200-300. What's good and what's not?

i have a KDS Avitron 17" flatscreen monitor and it is awesome. cost me $200 after a $30 mail in rebate from best buy and its probably even cheaper now (this was in april or may). this monitor has never given me any trouble and the resolution is great.

I have a NEC MultiSync FE700+ and it was $170 after rebate. It can display 1280x1024, .26 and I think 65Hz refresh

I have had some bad luck with NEC monitors, but I agree that Viewsonic and KDS have the best quality for cost. You also might want to look at some of the "generic" brands that have Trinitron tubes. Trinitron tubes are made by Sony and are pretty good.

.20? thats not possible.. well at least not .20ag pitch neways.. thats the old dot pitch ratings.. a .24ag pitch monitor would look sharper then a .20 pitch..

You might want to check into the LG Flatron monitors as well.

Well IMO there are only two brands that are great:
Adi and Sony
I have both
Adi is a little bit cheaper but no difference in picture quality, options and refresh ratez its actuall Sony with some modifications and it has no those annoyin clicks like Sony has when chngin modes..
Go for Adi ..;)

Do you have experience with any other brands that have sucked, or are you just saying that the two you have are good?

I've got the Samsung SyncMaster 955DF 19". The specs and picture on it are great, but I wouldn't buy it again. I had a noticable buzzing sound in my 1st one and exchanged it but the 2nd one also has a buzzing sound although not as noticable. Still I'd probably go with a newer model Samsung, unless it made noise. Sounds like KDS is good too.

Viewsonic and Sony continually get praise for their monitors. The Samsung NF series(not DF) is also supposed to be excellent(the DF series is a cheaper series, its good, just not as good). Of course everyone knows the best(out of your price range), Iiyama. Personally, I think you will fine that Viewsonic to be excellent, affordable, and findable(they are all over the place). Sony's are great, but they tend to be a little pricey. The Samsung DF series is having some great $40 and $50 rebates on it as well.

wow I dont hear anything coming from mine. Guess I got a good one :)

the only problem I have with mine is that it is bulky and hard to take to lans. A flat screen is what I need I guess.:D

What I would do if i had the money that you have to spend is start researching. Most generic brands are made by the popular brands and you can do pretty well if you research before you buy. KDS makes a whole bunch of the generic monitors, for instance the HP pavilian 17 incher that i have is actually a KDS monitor. So just do some searching and then when you find something that you like try to find info about it on the web. Because it looks to me that most of the other replies here are pretty partial to the brand of monitors that they currently own.

Man this is wierd. Sometimes when I load this page, I get a couple of cookies from samsung. What's with that???
I certainly learn a lot by having Opera show me any third party cookies.

Personally, I love Sony monitors (all their other stuff is crap IMO tho, lol). One 17" GDM-17se1 that I have had for 8(!) years still looks fantastic; bright and sharp after all that time. Some slight divergence issues (that are only noticable with the Nokia Monitor Testprogram.) It does not have geometry adjustment for divergence, which only appears on the edges, but that is just b/c it is old.

Overall, I would say BUY QUALITY when you get a monitor. Too many dumasses overlook the monitor when they buy a computer, like my friend who got "the best deal he could" and then after ~2 years the thing is starting to yellow, and has focus issues. A monitor (unlike pretty much all other computer hardware) is an investment that can last many years, as long as you buy something of high quality.

well, if you can spend more, i would recommend Sony, their colour is the best....
if you are short on $, try Samsung....i'm using the 900NF, and its performence is great.
if i'm you i will spend more on monitor....they are not like cpu or video card, where you will(or must:D ) change in a year or two....a good monitor can lasts for years.....
