Hey all,

I recently upgraded my computer to the specs in my sig, and my old parts are:

Asus M2R32-MVP Mobo
AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0Ghz
Corsair 4x 1gb XMS2 PC-6400 @400Mhz
2x Sapphire X1950 pro xfire edition video cards (both 512MB)

I am rebuilding the system for a guy at work, and he supplied me with:

650watt Rosewill PSU
640Gig WD SATAII hard drive
IDE CD/DVD-RW

I have the system up and running on Windows XP Pro and it runs flawlessly.... or so I thought.

The system ran perfect for me when I ran Winxp Pro and Vista Ultimate, but for some reason with this new set up the whole computer will freeze when I begin to use a 3d application. I have tried one card by its self, and both on crossfire and the same result. Sometimes it will run for a few seconds and other times it freezes instantly on load. I have changed the display drivers to ones that I used in my old system and I have the same issue. The heat is not an issue, as the cards run from 48c to 54c and that is about where it locks up. Once it got to 59c but still locked up.

PSU is sufficient as I used a 585W on these two cards previously.
RAM tested fine on stress test.
CPU tested fine on stress test and topped at 55c
Northbridge temp stays at 44-48c range

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Nope, the 585w does the same thing, although it lasted a little longer - about 25 seconds, but that was only running 1 card.

Any other suggestions?

I know that you said the ram tested out okay, but pull them all and test them each individually (not with memtest, but by running a 3d app), then incrementally start adding them back. Not too much effort involved, and can absolutely rule that out.

Oscar Mike Golf Whiskey Tango Foxtrot...

So I figured it out. It is GPU-Z doing the damage. I use GPU-Z to monitor the temps and I tried 3dmark06 w/o GPU-Z and had absolutely no issues.

hmm..... oh well i guess

Thanks for your help everyone!

Try Everest (http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html) to check out the temps of the cards.
