AAARRRRGGGG.....25 times now at least! I've yet to have any sucess. AMD Duron 600 (2 of them actually and I alternate attempts). K7S5A mobo (although that shouldn't have ANYTHING to do with it.
I've penciled, erased, cleaned with alcohol, penciled, cleaned........
Am I just getting unlucky or is it THAT hard?

I tried the pencil trick once. Didn't work. Gave up and got a defogger repair kit. This has been used on 3 cpus, and all were good first try. And I have more left!

Have you tried different pencils? Some leads are far more conductive than others. I used defogger paint personally.

I have also used defogger paint with great success. It is also very easy to remove, it scraps in one piece, leaving no traces to the bridge. I also had some unsuccessful attempts with pencil trick. I have read somewhere that pencil trick HAS to do with the motherboard, as the signals through L-bridges are used from the motherboard to determine if it allows mult. change. Some motherboards are more sensitive to those signals than others.
Hope I helped and sorry for bad English.

nope....I went to a local auto shop looking for the defogger kit....also went to the Shack looking for a conductive pen. I'm giving up for now....maybe I'll try a couple other auto shops.

I've used the pencil trick on 3 different CPU's. It worked very well, so I think it must be the mobo. Once, I thought it wasn't working. It was a Duron 750 on a Soyo board. The multiplier was set with a dip switch. It wouldn't boot at 800, so I redid it. Still no go. About to give up, I tried 850. Lights, camera, action! Strange but true.

no switches/jumpers on the board, and I don't even get the option to change the multiplyer. Bought a brand new #2 pencil for this thing too! Grrrr...I'm out 10 cents now! =)

Go here (http://www.overclockers.com/topiclist/index04.asp#BEGINNER GUIDES) for a start. Then here (http://www.overclockers.com/tips402/) for a few tips. The Shack only sells it on-line but the Chemtronic CW2200MTP (http://www.chemtronics.com/catalog/catalog.cgi?action=list_products&category=7#20140) is a way better product. You can find a distributor here (http://www.chemtronics.com/public/dist_finder.cgi) for the pen.
This is the best tool...

Thanks sonny. I really wanted to play with this thing tonight, but that's not gonna happen so I may as well order one.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.:(
I figured since the pencil trick wasn't a perminent thing and ppl were having probs with the stuff "wearing off" . I used a conductive pen and a jewlers glass (10x) to do my Duron.
Stay at it, you'll get it.

It took me a couple tries before I realized that my mobo didn't have the multiplier option IN bios... only on jumpers. I don't know your specific board but maybe it's the same thing. See if you can change mutiplier via your jumpers...

Welcome to the "other" side!
Seriously, I've done them both ways and have been successful with each method, I must be lucky.
If you can get the rear window repair kit, make sure that you get the right stuff. There are two products available. One is for repairing the wiring attachment to the grid and the other (the one that you want) is for repairing the traces themselves. If you can find a parts store that handles "Locktite" products, the part number of the stuff that you want is "15067".
I guess there's not much call for this stuff in Florida.
If you can't get it down there, let me know and I'll send you some.
By the way, those DURON 600's are great chips for overclocking.

Hey Shadow I have used 2 types of pencils on different CPUs and 3 different MBs
The most common I have used was an 'American' #2 and the other a harder to find and I have used it less often is 'Pentech' RubberWriter(has a rubbery coating on outside) #2
Look for those at your Office Max if you have problems locating a Defogger kit.
Oh yeah I have only had one bad pencil job... erased it and got it the second time.

Thanks for all the input and offer guys, I'm done with it for a couple days since I'm out of town for the next 36 hours or so, but I'll see what I can find as soon as I get back!

well the main problem is the ecs k7s5a board!! it has NO multiplier options!!!
i just built 2 computers with that board, it works great and stable!
but no multiplier, so whats the reason for unlocking it?
or do you have a golden socket?

There is actually a modification that you can do to the k7s5a which will allow you to change the Vcore and multiplier.
The brave and foolish can check it out here (http://www.ocworkbench.com/hardware/elite/k7s5amod/k7s5amodp1.htm)
reminds me a bit of modding my playstation LOL

i found that the cheapie roseart pencils work best!!! the #2 pencil, i made a line about 1/8inch long and tested the resistanc and it was like 2-3 and then when i closed my bridges the resistance was almost 0(because of the length)
a pic of what it looks like
