Hello all!

This is my first post, please excuse my ignorance and long winded nature as i am generally pretty thick when it comes to computers.

i have just purchased a Sony Vaio notebook (a little laptop). It is quite old and does not have a built in wifi transmitter/reciever (sorry for my lack of correct terminology!)

I have been given a Net Gear W111V2 USB dongle (is that what you call them?) in an attempt to get onto the internet. It came with no software or drivers and subsequently, when i connect it, the notebook cannot find the drivers and cannot operate it.

SO....i have tried looking to get a driver for it online, and have successfully downloaded a program called DriverUpdaterPro and have transfered it via USB to the notebook. When i run the program it tells me that a few drivers need updating and if i want to update them, please connect to the internet.
As i am trying to get a driver to allow me to use the internet this is not possible.
However, when i try to run this on my desktop pc, it wants to update all my drivers, which i am worried will mess up my desktop computer.

Could anybody (pretty) please tell me what i can do to get the notebook online, wheter its a link to a proper driver or a recommendation of a good usb transmitter/reciever?
Please note that my notebook has no CD or floppy drive, so i cannot install software from a cd.

Thanks, i hope this is a clear enough explanation of the problem.

Get the driver straight from netgears website.

What he said..
Download the driver straight from the manufacturers site and install it that way.

Thanks for all the help, unfortunately the dongle itself was faulty.

A friend gave me a pcmcia wifi card and i have downloaded the drivers for that, but unfortunately it doesn't work as the notebook says "the device 'ricoh r/rl/rt/rc/5c475(II) or compatible cardbus controller" has detected a cardbus card in its slot, but the firmware on this system is not configured to allow the cardbus controller to run in cardbus mode" everytime it is inserted.

i have looked at system device properties but cannot find any info....is this an easy fix or should i get a better USB dongle?

Thanks again

big hammer usually sorts problems like this for me...

not having much luck are you..

can you not get another dongle?
can you not use a cable to connect?

if you get another dongle it should come with a cd..

Ha! Yeah, i have considered a sharp blow to the top of the notebook may cure the problem.

But seriously, is the pcmcia issue a quick fix or is it more hassle then its worth?

With my very limited computer knowledge, i can make a uneducated guess that it might just be a case of changing some settings?

I would rather not buy another dongle, but if its the best way then please recommend me a good cheap one, I am a student :)

Thanks for all your help, if anyone every needs to know anything about analogue audio electronics, i can help you out :)

pls explain why aplifiers have infinite gain.. but you can only amplify so much.. i never understood that in electronics.
cheers

In opamps, the gain is indeed infinite, but is made finite by the series of components in the gain path.

Any raises on the PCMCIA problem?

Would that work for you? It is a USB based card, and has drivers for every modern OS (linux, vista, xp, 64 and 32 bit for everything.
