When I was at a Best Buy a week ago to get digital converter boxes, I looked at the memory section of the store... it is quite insane. They had a single DDR2-533 512MB module for $100 (you can get a G.Skill 512MB DDR2-533 module for $9 at NewEgg).

Too bad PC Club went belly-up; was the only suitable "brick & mortar" store that had close-to reasonable pricing.

CompUSA is hardly bad, now that they're owned by the same company as TigerDirect.com. There just happen to be very few physical CompUSA stores left.

It might have been the original price on the day it was released. MSRPs are silly anyway, even if you forget about buying online tech products don't stay at MSRP for too long.

Best Buy should be shut down for such poor business ethics. I'm sorry but if you shop at Best Buy, you deserve to be robbed. They are such a joke.

Except that sometimes, they have some damn good sales. 4850/4870 for $150/$250 about a month ago, and I bought five 500GB 7200.10 drives a long while ago for $99.99 each when they were still ~$120 online.

Yeah and once in a while, my computer boots, so it's ok*........No offense Petteyg, but I can't agree with that reasoning. They are still a terrible company with terrible ethics.
*My computer is actually fine, that's just as an example.

They're no worse than any other similar company. Radio Shack, Circuit City, etc. all charge the same horribly inflated prices. All of them are based on profit, they aren't there to save you money.

I recently got 2GB of pc3200 off a guy. He wanted $60 saying 'thats what he paid' in some hick town.
I explained that I couldn't be held responsible for someone else's idiocy and paid market price.

Last time I checked most companies are based on profit ;)

I'm just saying from a business ethics and profitability standpoint. The ethics are obvious, however the profitability may escape the execs at Best Buy. You make less than 300% profit per unit and keep customer happy and coming back. I mean seriously, you can't tell me that Best buy is not at least tripling their money on a freaking 8800GTs at $400!! Let's be reasonable, they shouldn't be in business and are only still so, because of preying on an ignorant public.
IMO there should be laws that make what they do every day, illegal.

Tell me about it...... Last time I upgraded my main rig I spent over $400 for 2 gigs of DDR1
Ordered 2 x 2gig sticks of decent 1066mhz DDR2 last week and it was less than $70 for 4 Gigs :eek:
It'll be even cheaper imho come black Friday...

That card is not "crap" at all. I'm running 2 of them at 1680*1050 and I get about 150 FPS in every source game I play with settings maxed. I mean of course, the price was about $400 last year, but considering how great of a card it was, and still is, I think it was worth, and I'm still saying this, even though I picked up my second card for about $100 last month. But anyway, about the ram, Best Buy is always like that. Not many people that know much about PCs go into best buy, so they can charge whatever they like and people will suffice. Thats why to us the prices seem crazy. I mean, they are crazy anyway, but a regular person wouldn't know this.

I think most of you need to goto business school. Yes they charge a lot more than newegg for stuff, but try owning your own computer shop, and sell the stuff at a price that newegg is selling, you won't come out ahead ever. Shipping stuff from a warehouse to end users is one thing and selling stuff at a retail shop is another. overhead costs and inventory turnover will demolish. Warehouse doesn't have a lot of overhead and inventory turnover issues due selling in a lot of volume at a cheaper price from on location.
I do shop at best buy time to time, but i don't buy computer stuff from there i know better because i know where else to get them (except for the rocketfish case). Most people that buy stuff are people who don't know much about computers.
Sorry i am being rude to anyone.

Your argument isn't 100% true. Best Buy has the buying power to buy in bulk and charge lower prices while still making a large profit, yes Newegg has a slight advantage not having physical shops, but Fry's does and their prices are right in line with Newegg many times. And even better at times.

+1 Bulk discount purchasing and 300% markup combined with low wages payed out must make it hard to turn a profit :screwy:

Hey, smart people!
1. Count the number of B&M Fry's stores.
2. Count the number of B&M Best Buy stores.
3. Count the extra services Best Buy offers.
4. Think.
5. Continue thinking.
Think about how many people are willing to pay BestBuy's prices, too.
Okay, now you see why they have no problem charging those prices. They don't lose sleep over it and we continue to shop on NewEgg.
I still visit BestBuy on occassion for DVDs (got the FireFly set for $20 after New Years 08.)

ok, listen to me... all I'm saying is, you dont need to mark something up to 400% of its market price to make a profit on the overhead. I understand they need to mark things up to sell in store, but from $60 to $300 is insane... the profit margin on that is enough 2 pay one of their employees for a couple days... on 1 pack of RAM! and they claim that they dont get barely any profit from any of their inventory, but mostly from their plans (and I dont doubt that they get the majority of their profit from plans, but seriously, there is no way that they aren't making a profit on that mark-up)
as far as that being original price a year ago, think again...

like I said... >.<;
and I like shopping around and comparing prices, and I honestly dont mind paying extra for the convenience of having it now, but those prices are completely insane...

@ Pettey
Haha, well I guess some can justify almost anything despite it's ridiculousness.
Hey Look! There go three hundred people jumping off a cliff with no parachute, well if they're doing it, it must be ok........I'm sorry, can't see the logic there :shrug:
Just wanna toss out there as well: Those "extra services" aren't free ;)
Edit - Well put Aztroth :thup:
2nd Edit - Pettey, please don't take it as an attack, I just can't understand any possible justification for such blatant Audacity as they exhibit in their pricing and preying on the ignorant. In the end, I guess it's just survival of the fittest and to each his own. I, for one, will never set foot in that place and allow myself to be subject to such idiocy(BB).

Best Buy != NewEgg
General Public != Voltmodder
General Public != Pinmodder
General Public does not build his/her own systems from parts they bought online. General public does not research his/her product choices at various review sites before buying. General Public does not shop around online before purchasing a product. General Public does not understand how a product called GeForce GTX 260 could be better than a product called GeForce 9800 GTX, as 9800 is obviously a higher number than 260. General Public believes MHz and MB are all that matters. General Public believes everything they see on TV and hear on the radio. General Public shops at Best Buy. General Public listens to the Best Buy sales associate's advice, and follows it.
Best Buy's target audience is General Public. If you're not General Public, then get over it, they don't give a gerbil's **** about your opinion.

This is STILL untrue. Sometimes they have some very good sales. Please refer to my first post in this thread (http://www.ocforums.com/showpost.php?p=5854043&postcount=10).

Funny of you to say that about general public.......If you aren't building a computer, why buy parts? If you say to upgrade, I'm laughing because in the case you are stating, that'd be based on advice from a tech guy who will say to the person, "I suggest xxx, If that's ok, I'll get one and install it for you and here's the bill" The "consumer usually isn't going to buy it and bring it to somebody to install. Or, if you are referring to the wonderful "extra services" like Geek Squad"........well thank you for proving my point :thup:
In response to the second comment, you listed two decent sales out of the thousands they have, that hardly proves a point. They do have the worst price/parts in retail.....bar none.

I think I struck a nerve, lol...
look, I have links posted in my previous post that I believe merit taking a look at. You see, I work in an electronics retail store (Office Depot, and yes, I know its not most peoples first thought when looking for electronics, but over 50% of our stock and inventory are electronics, and 70%+ of our sales come from that section.). I know that there is markup. However, I also know that most people are NOT willing to dish out $100 for a gig of RAM much less $430 for 2 gigs. And that people are more likely to spend $600-$1500 on a new computer that is barely worth $300-$700 when broken down into parts, than spend the $50-$100 on a new stick of ram. People are illogical, and the retailers are too.
and Old Skool, I wouldn't say "Bar None". Circuit City tends to be priced higher on most of their stuff.

The only computer things I'll buy from best buy are laptops and the occasional GPU when there is a killer deal (very rare). When it comes to TV's, they are really hard to beat. Last week I Bought a 32" sharp Aquos for $480.00 after tax. Why is it this way, competition. There are lots of places selling tv's right now, but how many are selling computer parts, very little (or none when it comes to missouri :bang head)
