I wnt to upgrade an old computer and want to overclock it. If it gets messed up its an "oh well" situation. Does anyone have any reckomended settings. I have an ASUS P3B-F MB. it is jumperless and i can change both the multiplier and the FSB. the multiplier goes up to 8x. and the FSB goes up to 150mhz. The only thing i am going to need to buy is RAM, and im not willing to mess it up. i want a fast yet stable configuration. Thanx!

Yep, you have some good overclocking potential there. Asus is an overclocking friendly motherboard. Those old P-IIIs won't go too high, but you should be able to hit at least 600 to 650 MHz or more if your cooling is good. The nice thing about those early P-III CPUs is that they have 512k of cache compared to 256k of the coppermines. The multiplier is locked, so you'll need to play with the FSB settings to actually overclock.

Actually its not a full 512 cache, the cache is ran at half speed which is 256K.

Those P3 450 seem to overclock better than the later Katmai.. Try starting 120x4.5 and you should go from there. And the vcore only varies from 2v-2.05v

To my understanding of it, it is. The cache is just not checked as often because it's running at half speed. That P3-450 would have a 512k cache, but would only check it at 225Mhz. It would still store more data than the 256k cache of the CUmine core.
