View Full Version : ECS & ASUS..temperature comparison..you decide!
Below is a chart showing the temperature differences between an ECS K7S5A and an Asus A7V133.
Both use trhe same Taisol HSF, same FSB setting and the multiplier was left to the default of 10. The CPU is an AMD Athlon 1000MHz 200 FSB.
The only difference is that the ECS board used a Vcore .05v higher because I did not want to cut the L7 bridges.
BUT, even with the higher Vcore, it did better!
The load was nothing more than a burn-in test in SSandra.
I did these test because I was surprised to notice that the ECS board ran cooler in every configuration I set up.
I find that very interesting!!
What are your deductions??

Asus motherboard monitors do not measure the temperature of CPUs very effectively. In fact, until some manufacturer gets the onboard diode on the new Palomino Athlons to work correctly, none do. They are all an estimation.
The motherboard really has very little to do with how hot or cool your CPU runs, besides what voltage and speed it's set at. All you're seeing is how accurately or inaccurately the two different motherboards measure the CPU temp with the socket's built-in thermistor.
Well, what you say is very true and I am acutely aware of the problems with the Asus thermistor.
However, I appologize for not including the following information.
When I measure these temps I use an LCD probe placed next to the CPU core in addition to the mainboard diode.
In both cases the difference between the two were within 1-2 degrees. Meaning that if I listed a reading of 49 in MBM5, the LCD probe was very close to that.
Mainly what the chart says to me is that OVERALL the ECS is working the CPU less and acheiving a lower OVERALL operating temp.

Is it at load? What's the ambient?
Those are *very* important questions that need to be asked to validate your data.
*Moved to "Cooling"*
Hmm did both the setups have the same thing just with a motherboard swap.
Hows the diode placed? Did you sort of mod it and snip out the wire so it exposes some skin?
Yodums
Ambient remained the same throughout all tests.
Temps in the chart are 'load' temps but as I said it was just a burnin from SSandra. In my opinion, how hard the system was stressed is not a factor as long as all tests were conducted equally.
Yes, the probe is modified by trimming the coating back so that the sensor is nearly exposed and applying a small amount of ASII to the point of contact.
As far as both system being EXACTLY the same, not entirely. The Asus board doesn't like the ATI video card so that is used on the ECS and a Diamond Stealth is on the Asus. Also, each board has its own HDD because reloading the OS for each switch is no small task.
Look, I am not saying this is 'proof positive' of a difference in mainboards. It is simply MY observation! I cannot remember seeing any reviews using such comparisions done by "professionals" under "controlled" conditions.
If anyone knows of such a review, please let me know.
OK, maybe stating that "The only difference is that the ECS board used a Vcore .05v higher..." was a bit misleading...sorry!
