View Full Version : How I ghettoized my cooling setup.

I can't believe I did it either, but it's working fine. My computer isn't overclocked at all... it a standard crappy gateway P3 600 mhz. 320 megs ram, and a GeForce 2 GTS video card. This whole thing got started when i went to a computer show a week ago. I got some Arctic Silver 2 paste and a Delta 50 fan. I had a 120mm fan, 92mm fan, expansion slot cooling fan, and a new video card cooling fan ready to go.

I opened up my case and took about an hour to figure out how to get the processor out... Within the first 5 minutes i had unscrewed the brackets that were holding the cpu into the slot, but it still wouldn't budge so I thought those didn't need to be off. So i put them back on... lol this was late at night too so don't yell at me I was tired. eventually I got it off and took the fan off of the heatsink. This little fan is a joke... maybe it pushes 8cfm... MAYBE... Now the heatsink was epoxied to the cpu, but it was really easy to remove. The hardest part was trying to remove the plastic clips that were installed to keep the heatsink and fan connected to the cpu. Well they are one way clips, so I just cut those off.

So I cleaned everything put arctic silver on it and put it back. But how am I supposed to keep the Heatsink and fan connected to the CPU?

Well first, the fan didn't even fit on the heatsink, so I grabbed some pliers and bent the heatsink fins slightly so i could cram the fan into the heatsink. But I knew it wouldn't stay. What could I use.... CABLE TIES lol.. Yea... There were 4 holes left over in the Heatsink from the plastic clips, so in 2 holes, on a diagonal, I fasted the fan to the heatsink.

Now to get the HSF to stay on the CPU... Picture hanging wire! I took like two 8 inch loops off the stainless steel wire and used that on the remaining two holes in the heatsink. I had to feed it through the fan, around the heatsink, and then through a hole on the outside of the circuit board on the CPU. I crimped it around itself several times and then soldered the crimp and cut off the excess.

I plugged it in and was amazed it worked... Wow... I felt like MacGuyver when he makes bombs out of lint and a toothpick.

But needless to say the computer isn't freezing up or giving any BSOD's.

Laugh at me please lol

Before I use to have the slot computer but I don't know why you went through all that trouble as you will not be able to overclock the setup and the old P3 don't even get over near 45 celius to begin with thermal pad w/ stock cooling.

When I had one I replaced the original cooler with a Golden Orb.
Didn't know why but I was stupid.

But when you take off the stock fan you most likely won't be able to put it back but in this case you bent everything together eheh...

I wasn't going for an overclock... I wouldn't waste my time with this crappy setup. I was just tired of the computer freezing and stuff... the fans took care of it. It looks sooo terrible it's funny. I mean the plastic cover on the back doesn't even stay on by itself. I have it on the back held on only by the clamps at the tops of the slot. HAha... I need money... maybe i'll get a job... lol
