View Full Version : Any info on why the GX2 runs Crysis so poorly?

I was googling it, but I only find people who just have low performance. An 8800GT on my machine runs Crysis better than the 9800GX2 does. I've seen tons of benchmarks and they all have the same results. The GX2 simply cannot handle the game.
Has there been any insight on to why is this? Some say it's the SLI scaling, but other single cards mounted in SLI still do better than the GX2. What gives? Has there been any solution provided yet?

That cant be right. A GX2 is 2 8800gt on sli...
Ive read is has some stutering problems when in high resolutions because of 512mb... but on framerate it does well.

It is two 8800gts 512mb actually, which is a bit faster and 128 sp's over 112.
Also, the 9800gx2 is one of the best optimized card for crysis, and actually beats the gtx280 by a good margin at most resolutions up to 1920x1200 very high from what I have seen in every review. Some manage to get 30fps or more at 1920x1200 very high 4xAA.

i run a gx2 in my main gaming rig and have not run into any scaling problems with any of the games i play.
currently - crysis, crysis warhead, COD4 and 5 beta.
give the ol' drivers an update i guess. i'm running 180.43's for 32bit XP

Are you sure guys? Tomshardware shows the 9800GX2 getting 4fps on Crysis, in my personal experience, I average around 25fps with 40fps being top, but a lot of dips into 15fps territory.
Or in this video, you can see the GX2 lags behind all the other cards tested.

:(
In the video you might see higher FPS for the GX2, but it looks choppy? I get that sometimes in Farcry2, Fraps gives me a reading of 30-40fps but the game clearly looks to be around 20-25fps

Man, why do I get such bad performance? :S
I'm gonna reinstall Crysis and see if it's "fixed" now. Maybe I had a faulty install or something grrr.

did you update your drivers like chinstrap said?

Oh and if I enabled 4x AA on Crysis, I'd get no more than 15fps :/

Try uninstalling drivers, cleaning with driver cleaner pro, then reinstalling. Then try a clean OS install (on another hard drive or partition just to test and see if it fixes the issue) or another OS. If your problems still persist then it must be a faulty card or something wrong with your hardware.

I'm going to install XP x64 today, see how that turns out.

i would do that, there might be some files left from previous drivers...

Oh and if I enabled 4x AA on Crysis, I'd get no more than 15fps :/I replaced an 8800GTX with a 9800GX2 and get almost twice the frame rate. I'm using 178.13 drivers. Make sure your GX2 is not overheating. You have to set fan speed manually to 100% or it will overheat (Precision is easy to setup the On Screen temperature display)
BTW, even with a GX2 you can't just max out the IQ settings on either Crysis or Warhead. I run with max IQ except on Shaders and Shadows. In some infamous sections of these games, you will have to lower settings even more because they are so demanding. Forget AA on these games - there aren't many straight lines to show jaggies...

GX2 is known to be one of the best cards for crysis. Beating the gtx280 even. Not by much but it still wins in crysis.
I would wager that you are running at a lower resolution that isn't allowing the 9800GX2 to stretch it's legs properly.

Try backing your clocks (CPU and GPU) back to stock. You might not be stable.
