I have an old WD 6gig hard drive that stopped working a couple of months ago. It was a bad batch of drives as reported by WD so its early death was expected (only lasted 4 years), but sudden. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong with it, but it seems like the read/write heads are locked in the "parked" position.
I'm looking to bring the drive back to life to at least backup everything I had on it to cdr, and was wondering if anyone else has transplanted the platters from a hard drive to another with success, or even repaired thier hard drive at all.
The data on the drive isn't anything I can't replace, but boy it would take me a hell of a long time to find and download everything again. And that only what I can remember I had on the drive. :eh?:

yes, my friend transplanted the platters for a teacher back in high school, but the drive only lasted a couple of hours. You may be able to do a transplant, but I'd say you won't get enough useful time out of it to backup most of the data. But hey, it's worth a try. what do you have to lose? :)
