laptops?

is there any way to build your own laptop, like a regular desktop? my father is thinking about buying one, and I'm curious about this

From others I've talked to no this isn't possible right now... one guy said he could order ANY part you need for a laptop... except a motherboard... this seems to be the one (and most crucial) component that cannot be ordered. :(

The curse of the laptop. Most, if not all the parts are proprietary. They are made for that specific laptop, and often will not work on another.
Ordering the parts to make one would cost so much more money, you could probably buy two ready made one's for the same price.
(Remember, if Sony is the only one on the planet that has a certain part, they will charge what they want to charge, there's no competition in laptop parts, and that's the way they like it to be.)
