I'm a purist.
I was one of the last people on earth to switch from analog because I thought digital was for yuppie, communist, Satan freaks.
And I still believe that half the kids rocking Guitar Hero should be rocking a real guitar like I did when I was a kid. But let's face it... my rhythm is not one of my stronger suits. And I couldn't drum my way out of a tin box.
All that coupled with the fact that Circuit City has one foot in the grave led to me picking up the PS2/PS3 Rockband drums for $44. (Down from twice as much this past spring.)
I've loved the way Rock Band handled drums ever since the first demo kit hit Chicago. And figured it would be a fun way to work on my rhythm (the drums aren't much different than real electronic drums... as opposed to the guitar) and play a game at the same time.
I knew there would be a hack or something to get the drums to work on the PC, and there is for the 360 version, but I was surprised to find the PS2/PS3 drum set worked without any mods at all! Pure plug and play. Add a program like Midijoy, and you have a $44 electronic drum set.
Anyway... Now I've got my drum set, and enough apps to do some amazing stuff... but my drumming still sucks and I don't have a game to play.
Well... It turns out the PC Community had me covered once again with Frets on Fire.
It's basically a user created, community supported music game. That means there are MILLIONS of mods for it. There are even mods for you to turn it INTO guitar hero or rockband (complete with songs) should you so desire. You can import your own songs... you can do whatever the hell you want.
It's basically like the second coming of M.U.G.E.N. only for music.
It was originally designed to be played with a keyboard too... so it ain't bad even if you just want to kill some time at work.
Just figured I'd give you guys a head's up if you've never heard of it before. (Since I literally JUST downloaded it 20 minutes ago and had never heard of it.)

I just got myself the PS2 drum kit too ;)
However I'm having a lot of trouble combining the Hering (Drum support) and Rockband mods into my FoF. I wish they'd make it so much easier to add mods, and that mods didn't rely on others! So many mods out there go like this:
This is the downport to FoF 1.1.314 of my mod.
It should work when you have the following installed:
-RF Mod 3.5
-Capos Mod 4.0
-crazy neos score amp
-Raphs GH mod
Just silly :|

Why don't you upgrade to 1.3.110?
I only got that one because it was the only one I could find... but I haven't heard anything bad about getting mods to work with it...
I tried Frets on Fire for a while. It's nice because you have such a huge variety of songs, but for me it still didn't replace guitar hero. The user-created songs are great, but a lot of the times the fretting isn't good. And the hammer-ons didn't work too well...

I tried it a while ago and I found the timing of the notes vs music to be different and it was kind of a pain in the ass compared to GH. That sounds like it's been fixed though, I'll give it another go.
I've tried Frets on Fire before, but I can't get it running on my Vista Brick. (Yes, that's all my 3k $ Laptop is, a Brick. =P)
Anyways, have they fixed Vista Compatibility Issues? Or is it just my crappy computer?

I also have played frets on fire a bit. I couldn't get the hang of importing songs though for whatever reason it just didnt work for me.
If anyone knows of a walkthrough for it can you post a link? I tried it about 2 months ago and couldnt get it to go

Yeah the latest version I'm running works fine in Vista.

Importing songs? I just started playing yesterday and I can't imagine anything easier:
1. create a directory called "songs"
2. download the songs you want http://fretsonfire.wikidot.com/custom-songs
3. put them in the "songs" directory
4. FOF will ask you where the directory is the first time you run it.
5. start playing.
...that's about as easy as it gets.
Unless you're wondering how to make games from scratch?
Now THAT's a gigantic pain in the ass!
First of all the song has to be in .ogg format. Then you need to create a midi file with all the cues that the player has to hit (and possibly do the lyrics and the drums.)
I'm sure there's a tut for it on the official site I linked to on the first post.

This is just for the hell of it:

...THAT's why I was only interested in the drums. I can play the damned guitar. But I can't do THAT. (or THAT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTyZ-WCQoos actually...)

Yes, I'm using 1.3 too, but I couldn't find a mod that would allow drum notes + rockband mod on 1.3.
Do you know where I can get that?

Will this work with the 360's rockband drum kit?
I know i can get it to work on the PC, since I've done it before with the program "drum machine". So I imagine frets on fire should see the 360 ones as well.
Just too bad the 360's Rock Band 2 drum kit won't work, since it's wireless...and wireless only. Because i hate the Rock Band 1 drum kit. Too damn loud.

Too damned loud? Have you ever heard a REAL drum set before?
I have. I had one when I was six and was holding on to one for someone else about ten years ago. THEY were loud. Besides... if the noise bothers you that much it's fairly easy to make the same dampeners they have for Rockband 2.
And yes... as long as you can get windows to recognize the 360 drums as a controller, then they will work just fine in Frets on fire.
I now have all the Rockband 1 songs on Frets of Fire. (I *would* have all the Guitar hero songs... but I'm running out of hard drive space on this laptop and still have to rebuild my main rig... sigh...)

That most definately did not work for me. I tried that, it didnt see the songs i put in the folder. I thought there must be some trick. I downloaded them right off of the FoF website. Hmm

It was probably just the old version you were running. Check out the latest version on the site. I've been playing all day (FOUR STARS ON "Wave of Mutilation"!!!!)
It did glitch out on me once where it didn't recognize my drums or the songs. I just exited and restarted and it all showed up just fine.
Hey... for FREE you can't beat it.
I won't be able to pick up Rockband until I get paid next Friday (and won't be getting Rockband 2 until after I fix my main computer rig...) so at least I have SOMETHING to do while I wait.
Granted... I should be finishing Baldur's Gate 1 and Metal Gear Solid 1 since I'm right at the end of both...
But, eh...

Thanks! However, that Megaupload link is giving me a 20kb/s download, it slows down progressively until it fails :(
