View Full Version : 98se or win2k?
Hey guys--
I'm gonna use the rig in my sig ONLY for playing dvd's and gaming (building another system for everything else i need to do). Question: which of these os's would give me the best performance. The reason for these 2 choices is that I already have them in my possession :p I would appreciate ALL opinions.
Thanks everyone!

well i would say win2k. :D
Check and see if all the games you want to play will work on Win2k. If they will then go with Win2k, If they don't then go with Win98. Hope this helps.
Thanks!
I was leaning toward 2000 anyway.

2000 rocks, 98 crashes.
As long as all the games you want will work under 2k you sould get better performance AND stability too!
Most games made in the last few years run fine under 2k, btw.
I've actually seen XP "Home Edition" way out performs win2k.. If you can get your hands on XP Home, then you're making a heck of a difference... :)

you will find that win2k is the better platform
for newer games it will outperform win98
and wont crash
as for XP,win2k is still more stable
and EVERY benchmark ive seen has them within 1% of each other

Happy with win2k, but considering a dual with 98se, as my old external CDRW uses a version of Adaptec software that doesn't work in win2k. And roxio wants to force me to but the new version of their crappy software! Any1 know whwere to get a good free CD writing software?
I thought 98se was a popular choice because it didn't have the additional bells and whistles, therefore making it perform faster/better?

98se is the best version of win9x, imo, but it lacks the stabilty of 2000 and is not as fast. Bells and whistles are about the same in both. While I haven't used either yet (and would rather not) from what I've seen in some reports WinME and XP have extra bells and whistles that eat up more resources.

I switched to Win2k from 98se, and glad I did. Got drivers for everything, and things actually setup more easy. Plus, win2000 is just alot more fun to play with, if you've never used it then you'll enjoy all the administrative tools it has...
Anyway, as for games, I noticed no loss in speed, and my 3dmark scores were equal or a tad higher in win2k. I dunno, maybe I'm crazy, but it seems to like the new 23.11 dets and directx8.1 better than win98.
It took only about 5 months for my install of win98 to start slowing down...games weren't running very well, but when I reloaded with win2000 none of my games lockup at all or even skip.
Also, win2000 uses NTFS. You can choose fat32 or ntfs, go for ntfs, its a much more efficient file structure.
And, win2000 crashes [less]. One reason is that it will put programs in their own memory spaces, rather than mix them up like win9x will do. This way, if one program crashes, you have a MUCH better chace of not losing everything else and having windows crash.
Win2000 is hands down better.

win2k runs an updated NT kernel and uses heavily protected memory, meaning a program crash (often with games) wont bring down the system
it also uses a better memory controller, ensuring at least the same amount of performance as win98
as for bells and whistles
winME is 98 + extras
winXP is 2k + extras
my pc is currently sitting on a week and a half straight uptime on win2k
with heavy gaming (CS,RTCW,operation flashpoint and ghost recon)
i think ive had one game crash, which was killed off and let me restart without hassle
:)
I'm guessing your games are modern?
If so Win2K way better than Windows 98 as it was way more stable and includes the NTFS partition which will add maximum secruity.
Did I add with SP2 it is 100% stable until you screw with it.

I agree, if you don't get one with SP2, download it or find it, trust me, its worth it.
SP2 ROCKS!

Do most of you use the 2000 pro version?

I've got 2K pro, SP2, and I have tweaked a bunch of stuff- after research and exercising caution!
Windows 2000 Pro is about the best for home use. Server and Adv. Server chew up resourses, and I would only recommend them if you're, well, running a server. I think the longest I've ever had my Win2k box up is about 2 weeks, then my Domestic Overseers decided to turn it off (It had a whining delta in it at the time).

It's like choosing between win 3.1 and 95.
Go for 2000 pro. This is the best thing that Microsoft did for us.
Enjoy :)
I prefer 2Kpro but dual boot several machines with 2Kpro/98SE as well as 2Kpro/ME. This solves the software compatability issue.

is there a choice C?
How bout a dual boot? haha Anyway, that's how I have it. Well, for gaming purposes, I prefer w/ WIN98se. I play Counterstrike and Starcraft which messes up w/ WIN2K w/ SP2. ie...when minimizing counterstrike I cannot click back on unlike WIN98se. Sometimes w/ starcraft, I cannot seem to end task it in WIN2K after minimizing...that's sometimes w/ that. :(

Win98se is compatible with almost anything. That is, provided, what you add doesn't crash it. That and cash are probably the main reasons I still use it. I can tweak everything for performance. Sometimes, the wrong drivers or a corrupted file can screw up everything, so I make backups periodically. Otherwise, my 98se almost never crashes.

It always gets me every time I install that...

98se is by far the fastest gaming OS there is. WinMe is second, followed by 2K, then 2K Server, then NT4.0 (if you can get through the patching procsess to get a game to work properly). If all you're doing is playing games, and watching DVD's I'd go with 98se. If you're going to do ANYTHING else, on the system, I'd go with 2K.
