not that i have the most experiance of ppl here but i do alot of product research.id try a
gf3ti200 is $151 on pricewatch
xp1800 is $159
and soltek boards wich i think are great and cheap.loaded with features for under $100.
i think this might be about a $100 as to what u said u wanted but i think to me it would be a great start for overclocking and fast!
rather go for GeForce 2 Pro or GTS..much better than MX
Hey deathstar13...

http://www.pricewatch.com/ is the link to the site.
its just a online info gathering service on computer prices and there trends.
im not saying buy from any of those places. just used for priceing trends.
and yes those prices should b close to what you should pay at a local retailer.
any decent computer store that will handle hardware upgrades can order this stuff for you. and shouldnt charge more than 10% markup for there handleing this for you.
in my area the xp chip can be had instock at most times.
the gf3ti200 should be in stock or a 2 day order time
the soltek mboard my be a tricky item to get but well worth the effort.
i understand not using credit cards online i too dont use em.
but if u try ebay and look around u can find great deals on new stuff all the time. and if u live in the u.s.a (the worlds greatest country)! u can pay via money order or by check and just mail it to the seller. in most cases.just do a bit of research before u bid tho on who is selling the item.
i dont wanna sound like im trying to pursude you to buy more expensive stuff . its just my opion that sometimes spending a extra $100 or on the 3 most important parts of the computer .so can get u rewards much higher than u expected.
i know im kicking myself for purchising a OEM xp instaed of a box retail one.
if u look in my signiture below i can only get 143 fsb stable and thats as high as i can go!. its my darn cheap chip ,becouse i didnt have the xtra $30 bucks to spend at the time. now i pay dearly for it.now ill have to upgrade to a faster chip sooner. and most assuredly more expensive. had i bought a better chip(not oem) id still be working on getting higher speeds and not stuck!

Be very careful what you choose, make sure the combo has decent parts in it. I'm guessing you are getting the ECS K7S5a board, which is a decent board and very cheap. Lacks overcloking potential though...I like the board, but no oc'ing makes it slightly undersirable if you wish to oc. I've got my brother using it as a cheap upgrade from a pentium 2, and he's extremely happy with it, but he's not too big into oc'ing just yet... (he's getting there)
I'd recommend, if you were oc'ing, an AthlonXP 1600+ (1.4ghz) for $125 and an Epox 8KHA+ motherboard, for 98. Thats $223 for a setup that may actually be a tad bit faster than the ecs/1700+ setup...and the epox board is sweet for oc'ing. Those prices are from newegg.com
By the way, the 1700+ at newegg is 165, so for 70 more megahertz you're paying an extra 40 bucks...trust me, not worth it.
As for the video, you'll probably be best off going gf3 ti200. If you were planning on going $100 for the video card, than you can get a gf3ti200 for around 160 (a good one that is). If you are looking for more budget though, look at the gf2pro or gf2ti, or radeon7500. They've got some good bang for the buck and will run everything you wish it to.
But I'd strongly suggest the epox board and xp1600...

all i can say is ive been ordering things off the internet for years and i have never had anybody steal my credit card or do anything remotly like that. you have to remember that you are buying things from companys in America and if they rip you off its not that hard to call the cops on them. im not saying order all your parts online, im just saying dont trash the idea without doing research on it first, you could save yourself a lot of money
The nforce board from nVidia are a good combo. They have a GEforce 2 mx built into them that is bumped up a bit, good sound(Dolny 5.1) and abuilt in 10/100 LAN card. Nice if your on a budget since you need to buy almost no expansion cards. Costs around 325 in candaian dollars. The athlon 1600+ seems to be the best bang for you buck to me.

Athlon XP 1600+ at $125 is the best value... it can be easily overclocked to the 1700+, 1800+ or even higher speeds.
Ati 7500 $100 or GF2 Ti $115 for a good video card around $100. ATi has better image quality and hi-res TV-out, GF2 has better frame rate.
Shuttle AK31 v3.1 is a fairly good mobo for $80. Epox would be a bit better.
Budget a little bit of $ (say $40 or $50) for some video card ramsinks, a quality cpu heatsink and fan, and some artic silver, and you can easily get the same performance as higher-cost hardware.
Newegg.com RuLeZ!!! Ordering online will save you money.
125(CPU)+80-100(mobo)+100-120(vid card)+50(cooling)= about 350-375
With this kinda setup you should be able to get about 1500-1575 MHz (equivalent to XP 1800+) and you'll smoke the GF2 MX400 by at least 1500 or 2000 3dmarks.
