But for real i really think SETI is pointless, why should i let someone use my computer is crunch some numbers, maybe that SETI program is hacking into my computer and getting my info, maybe there using our computers as a hacking docking station, you never now, and there are real orginizations out there searching for extra terrestrial life with real equipment and real results, has seti even shown any pictures of there so called telescope or satelite, or anything else... im just pointing out the possiblities, i have nothing against SETI.

The reason people volunteer their computer time is out of a sense of community effort, altruism, etc. People want to do what they can to help, and why not. I personally use mine for folding, but the spirit is the same.
Haven't you ever just wanted to help, without any real reward other than a sense of satisfaction that you get when you know that your help is appreciated?
And with regard to there telescope, yes people have seen it, it is HUGE, bigger than you can imagine. It's on Puero Rico....I think.
Here's (http://www.naic.edu/about/ao/telefact.htm) the telescope.
No, I don't believe they're doing anything like you propose.
How do I know? Simple packet sniffer will show exactly what's sent and received.

flounder if they needed to use peoples computers to find some sort of cure, then i would let them, knowing that im helping with something, but searching for life which probably doesn't exist is pointless, think about it, even if aliens do exist do u think they actually have our technology, maybe there in thier prehistoric age and were here trying to contact them, if there are aliens that have better technology then us then let them find us, people always think of aliens to be our size, they can either be much bigger then us or much smaller then us, remember micro organisms do exist, there is probably a small alien civilization near us, but we cant see it cause there the size of a basketball. and i found something out, the sun is powered by Energizer Batteries, thats why it keeps going and going:D
There is no need to troll here.

I'm curious why you wanted help with joining if you think it's pointless  Take a look at the Drake equation. Beyond that if you want to argue about the integrity of the program you'll have better luck elsewhere.

The Seti Stuff forum is for people who want to discuss how to run Seti@Home, join the OC Seti Team, and discuss things relating to the project.
If you want to discuss why NOT to run Seti, try the Debate forum.
Not here.
Thank you!:)

you have a right to your opinion
however expressing it and re-expressing it here is not the correct thing to do
there are the debates forums and gripes and groans forums
im sure you will find plenty of people ready to have an arguement with you there.
so leave us happy little seti crunchers to ourselves
as like you we have our own opinions

Frank Drake.
He came up with a simple equation, now called the Drake Equation, that maps out the possibilities of ETI. The equation is quite easy to understand, so don't tune out, even if arithmetic isn't your strong suit! Here it is:
N = R * f(p) * n(e) * f(l) * f(i) * f(c) * L
"N" here represents the number of communicating civilizations in
our Milky Way galaxy. This number depends on several factors.
"R" is the rate of "suitable" star formation in the galaxy.
"f(p)" is the fraction of stars that have planets.
"n(e)" is the number of these planets around any star within the suitable ecosphere of the star. An "ecosphere" is a shell that
surrounds a star within which the conditions are suitable for
life to form. Too close and it's too hot; too far and it's too
cold.
"f(l)" is the fraction of those planets within the ecosphere on
which life actually evolves.
"f(i)" is the fraction of those planets on which intelligent life
evolves.
"f(c)" is the fraction of those planets where intelligent life
develops a technology and attempts communication.
"L," is the length of time that an intelligent, communicating
civilization lasts.

I'm sorry guys, i didn't mean to bad mouth SETI in anyway, btw what does troll mean?
The entire SETI Project has been well documented throughout its length thus far, yes there is a real telescope and yes believe it or not real data. The only thing Berkeley receives are your results files we call them WU's (Work Unit), not personal information about your computer. Being a big sci-fi buff the prospect of finding intelligent life elsewhere has always intrigued me. That is why I contribute my Comp time to it, since 99. I also contribute to Folding for another reason, to help out my fellow man finding cures to things that ail us. As it is folding is a relatively new endeavour and really still in the beta stages. SETI launched on May 13th of 1999 publicly, it initially was only going to run for two years but due to the overwhelming response they are extending it and have plans to add equipment at a southernly location so they can start analyzing a different part of the sky as well too. DC (Distributed Computing) Projects vary far and wide across the board, what you choose to devote your time to is something you need to decide what you think would be worth it to you. If you have no interest in the project it makes no sense to run it. I think for most of us running SETI it's the question that drives us, for others its the lack of extended amounts of downtime that the folding project at times seems plagued with.
Before you think about a DC Project ask yourself is this something that really interests me? If the answer is no then obviously you know not to download the project and even bother becoming involved if the answer is yes then please feel free to check out our site at www.ocsetiteam.com and find some more information. I am sure of course if you are interested in running SETI you will find alot of help and support right here as well.
Hope that helps
J
Speed is correct. If you decide that the SETI project is the one for you then you will have a tremendous amount of support from your teammates here at ocsetiteam. :) We welcome all new or interested parties to our team.
Troll: To post inflamatory comments to a thread. Usually with the desired effect to create flaming responses. It is immature and a waste of time. If your post was not meant as a Troll then please ignore.
