I'm looking around at building a Skulltrail setup and I have an opportunity to get these parts for a whole lot less then their retail price. I'm wondering what kind of limitations people have run into other then memory bottlenecks? How high have you overclocked (on air or water).

So far I'm looking at:
ASUS Z7S WS
2x X5460
4GB Kingston CL3 6400 FB-DIMMs
2x TRUEs

Would a Corsair TX750 be able to power that? Or should I be looking at an even bigger PSU? Also I know for sure the board supports Crossfire, but I read somewhere they it might support SLI in a future BIOS update. Anyone know if thats the case?

yea even though LGA771 is for servers, SKULLTRAIL is not in the server segment at newegg.com

well a quick trip to XS could answer a lot of questions... just off the top of my head i recall seeing both cpus clocked to 3.6ghz-3.8ghz area. im drawing blank cause i cant find the thread, i do recall one post though were both cpus were at 4ghz but i forget cooling used, maybe water? What i was seeing though was not the regual LGA771 cpus but the QX9775

btw the only things im finding atm at XS are the results Fugger got on [email protected] ghz. there is this thread with both at 4.8ghz but im still reading to find out on what kind of cooling. though im expecting it to be LN2 since the other thread at 5ghz is not much later and when he is still in vegas.

Yea they only made the QX9775 in C0 though, not E0. I can get a pair of X5460 E0 chips for really really cheap. The Intel Skulltrail board is maybe the most popular, but its not the only board out there utilizing the Intel 5400 chipset.

I read Fuggers thread with the LN2. Looks pretty good to be honest. Only consistent complaints seemed to be regarding the RAM.

that board wont support SLI, it doesnt have the NV media 200 chip. that is how intel got SLI approved on the "skulltrail" board. skulltrail is for the intel board, just cause its the same chipset on that asus. Doesnt make every 5400 series board a skulltrail board.

Gotcha. Well I wouldn't be running nVidia cards on it anyways. Only thing that is holding up the deal is the fact the Z7S-WS doesn't support any changes for the VTT of RAM settings. I think without any VTT control, that could cripple the overclock a bit. They implemented vcore control with the latest BIOS update, but I don't want to bank on them implementing RAM settings and VTT in a future one. I might have to see if I can snag the Intel BOXD5400XS.
