View Full Version : Water Cooling Hard Drive Rack

I've read quite a few how to guides around the net on how to make a water block for hard drives, and thought I'd give it a shot, as it didn't seem to hard. Problem is, I have 5 hard drive's in my machine, so the normal designs wouldn't do. I've taken the basic concept and turned it into a stack, so that I can use the space in my case efficiently. Now my WC rig is still in the contruction stage, (want to get it finished and polished completely before I fit it), and it'll consist of two WC units in the end. One for the CPU and northbridge, and another for the hard drives, (maybe the PSU as well on this chain, if I have time).

My question is, how should the water flow through this hard drive rack system? In series or in parallel? If I did it in series, the water would accumulate quite a lot of heat by the time it arrived to the last water block/hard drive. Any suggestions?

These are the drives that will be fitted to the rack:
Quantum Atlas 10K 18.2Gb
Quantum Atlas 10K 18.2Gb
Maxtor D740X 7200 ATA133 80Gb
Maxtor 5400 ATA100 27.7Gb
IBM Titan 7200 ATA66 10.1Gb

(I know the image only show's space for 4, although I'll construct for 5)

That's in order of which'll be the hotest, top to bottom.

I was considering getting two small radiators - 200mm x 150mm x 20-30mm, to go on either side of this rack, with a 120mm slimline fan on either side sucking out (ducted).

With two rad's on either side, I could split the traffic between them, having a Y spliter after the pump, so that half goes to the first two scsi drives, and half to the three IDE's. That's the only way I can think about doing it in parallel.

Koolance (http://koolance.com/faq/body.html#6a) says running in series is no problem. You aint gonna get half a degree per drive so don’t worry. I did see a neat pic of I guy who made his out of copper pipe. Cheap and easy and I can’t find it.

If you wanted to run parallel then use a series of tees in a row, one for each branch except for the last one.
