The 1st link is just a general article talking about how it was cracked, and has links so you can order the new special battery.
the 2nd link talks a bit more as to how they did it. Not very technical, but still cool.
This special batter will cost $30 in the U.S. It allows you to put the PSP into "service Mode", and will then allow you to downgrade the firmware. I don't know the details of HOW you exactly have to do that. but i imagine it wouldn't be too different than the current way you upgrade/downgrade the firmware on the PSP-2000's.
This Batter will work on both PSP-2000, and the new PSP-3000. This battery will go on sale on the 28th of this month, and you can already make preorders for it now.
I figured this deserved it's own thread. As not too many people read the current "how to change firmware on the PSP" thread.
I would expect tutorials as to how to upgrade/downgrade firmware in conjunction with this battery will be out within a week or two. ( if such guides aren't out already. )
If this works as well as the articles are saying...It may be time for me to sell my PSP-2000, and pick up the new PSP-3000 model. YAY.

The only thing that you can do with this battery is get into the service mode, you cannot flash the firmware or anything like that yet, so right now this battery is basically useless.

I heard the PSP-3000 screen was crap compared to the PSP-2000 one. Maybe someone who's owned both could chime in on that.

It's due to the way the pixels aligned. on the 2000 model, the pixels are more aligned in a vertical pattern. On the 3000 model, they are aligned in a horizontal pattern, Which causes the screen to appear as if it's displaying Scan-lines in some games/applications.

Scroll down, and notice the picture on the bottom right.

Link to the picture itself. ( which as you can see from this picture alone, the higher contrast ratio IS noticeable. though, i don't know know what settings they used on each model for each picture. But even so, You can still notice a pretty good difference between the colors of the two screens. )
The screen itself boats a contrast ratio 5 times that of the 2000 model. The exact numbers haven't been given.
Also, the new 3000 has a special setting called "wide" It's supposed to make the game/video look more "vivid". Which is supposed to help give a bit more contrast and detail. The problem is, It tends to saturate the colors, Making them look washed out ( aka: makes it appear as if it's just too damn bright ).

scroll down to the vader picture. The text right above that is where they start talking about this "wide" setting. They give comparison screen shots of the 3000 with the wide setting on, and the PSP-2000. They use the image of vader, and Metal slug as comparisons.
You can leave the setting on normal, which will give the same image detail as the 2000 model. Only difference is the contrast ratio of the two screens.
Also, the response time on the new screens has been shortened, to help get rid of the ghosting that the 1000, and 2000 models both have. From what i have read, It seems as if the response time does help.
Also, they put a anti-glare material on the screen, to help with glare. From what i have read, and seen pictures of, It helps a bit...but isn't that much of an improvement.
The biggest problem people seem to have is the "wide" setting, as it tends to saturate colors, and the new pixel structure, which makes it appear as if some games have scan-lines.
personally, I'd leave it on the "normal" setting, and let the LCD's higher contrast ratio help with colors, while having a better response time to help with the ghosting ( which is pretty bad on the 1000, and 2000 models. )
Though, I'm still up in the air over the the scan-line look. I'll have to see some more images, and some gameplay video's of it in action with different games to see if i can tolerate it or not.
well, that's the news on the screen. If anyone wants to know more information about the 3000 model, I probably have already read about it, Or i can dig up the info quickly.

A lot of good info zex, thanks.
Anyone know if the core 3000 is out yet, or when it does come out? I dont want some ugly Ratchet and Clank 3000 model.

I don't think there is a core model out yet. I honestly have no idea when they will be doing it either.
Also, xb1az3x is correct. So far, this only lets people get into the service mode of the PSP. so far though, no one has cracked the IPL yet. So until someone cracks it, and creates some firmware for it, this battery is useless.
but i doubt it will take very long to crack the 3000, since this battery has now come out, it should hopefully help those who know how to crack the PSP, and create new firmware.

This is ridiculous. I dont see why they would release some special edition one as the original. Especially such a kiddy version.
I want a PSP, like now. Not a childish Ratchet and Clank one, not a 2000. I want a plain jane 3000. Am I the only one who sees the problem here?
