Ive never overclocked before and I was wondering if I could get some advice on pushing my p2 beyond 450mhz.

Which motherboards do you have? Those P2 won't go that much higher.

Probably if you add some Arctic Silver Compound and clean the core and heatsink with alcohol since the thermal paste is all dried up it'll reduce abuot probably 7 degrees of heat.

But if its a Slot Cartridge processor you'll be having problmes putting that thing back on.

Welcome to the Forums!!! There are untold volumes of knowledge at Overclockers.com, some in the user guides linked from the front page, and much knowledge in the forums. The more user guides and articles you read, the more prepared you'll be, and the more speed you will achieve.

There's lots of naysayers here that say you should just forget about old processors. I say down with them. Most of my overclocking knowledge came from playing with my old PII 333. I sucessfully overclocked it to 515, in spite of their pessimism.

Your PII probably is multiplier locked (4X100), so the only overclocking you'll be able to do is FSB. Look at your motherboard manual, and see if you can adjust your FSB. You might be able to go to 103, 110, 115.... just depends on your motherboard. Once you find the jumpers/switches/BIOS settings to raise FSB, bump it up a little. Keep going until it's no longer stable. You may be able to play with voltages and such to make it stable, but upping the voltage makes a LOT more heat.

In my opinion, it's not worth the money to buy a great HSF or water cooling for an older system like this, since you'll probably max out the speed somewhere between 500-600 MHz so just use it as a learning experience. If you can find stuff cheap, or have extra stuff laying around, have fun with it! Experiment. You might get a great overclock, and you'll definately walk away more experienced.

I think my motherboard is a MO2B357, at least that is whats written on it. and as far as a manual goes I dont think I have one.
I'll be getting a whole new athlon system this weekend, but I just bought Alien vs Predator2 and I've been dying to try it.

Well 400 to 450 is really not that much but hey its worth a try.

Try going in the bios for a menu where it lets you adjust the FSB, multiplier etc.

Then try FSB to 110
Multiplier of 4(Don't even bother changing that its locked).

It'll give you 440. Then try 112x4 which will basically give you 450.

Then go for more.

If you can't boot in reset the cmos and don't think that your CPU is dead :)

I just tried to change the FSB, but it wont let me. everything having to do with the cpu is locked.

Uh-oh. Is your computer a brand name computer??? If so, I'm not surprised. Many manufacturers don't want you knowing about overclocking. Most end users will go out and buy a new system if they want more performance. Try if you can find the manufacturer to your motherboard, go to their website, and see if you can download a manual. If there are any jumpers in there that can unlock the BIOS or change your FSB, you'll be able to find them that way.
