Its a long story, but to make it a short one...
I had previously tried Overclocking my rig, after a steady 2.7Ghz became unsteady I became concerned something was awry with the motherboard. Turns out, there were two capacitors on the top edge next to the socket which had become loose.
The board wasn't new from the start, so I accepted it and repaired the loose solder connection.
After which, I got a stable 2.9XXGhz OC. Until my old, inferior, power supply gave out.
So, as a precautionary note, if you are having random trouble with an OC and have higher stated voltages than you set in the BIOS, just check that none of your caps are wobbly.
