View Full Version : will CPU bottleneck?
I recently purchased, well on the way, a 8800 GTS g92. I currently have a 7600GT. Question is, do you think my cpu will bottleneck?

Depends on what game you play or what application you are running. If the CPU utilization on even one of the cores of the CPU is at 100% you are bottlenecked.

how do you figure out if cpu xyz will bottleneck gpu abc ? or viceversa.. stuff like that
Well in a game or something like that you will lose performance, (well thats what happened to my card though.) I had my 4850 @ 30fps with my old cpu, now with me e7200 its averaging around 70ish but really it depends on the game.
Well, I got it today and ran 3dmark 5. The 7600GT gave me a score of 5593, the 8800GTS gave me a score fo 13950. Is this a decent score for this card? Looking at other results people seem to get 30k+
3dmark 6 from 3361 to 9361.

rydis, don't put too much faith into benchmarks like 3dmark. They are good for benching but not much else, since they factor in cpu into the score.
Easiest way to find out whether your cpu is bottlenecking something is to do an in game benchmark. Run crysis's benchmark tool if you have it, or play a game with fraps loaded. then google for reviews on the 8800GTS that you have. if a reviewer with a top end system gets the same fps as you with the 8800GTS, then you know that your cpu isn't bottlenecking. If not, then you know your cpu is holding you back.
