Hi there,
Just discovered this forum, and I bet itīs the right place for the following post.
IL2 Sturmovik is a very recent flight sim thatīs extremely cool (IMHO), and its gathering quite a fanatical response!! (I think itīs really unbelievable good, if you like flight sims, of course).
Well, basically, the demo version ran smooth as silk, but the retail version can st-st-stu stutter like hell even under some higher end systems (1 gig ddr, Athlon XP 1900+, GeForce3Ti!!).
As usual, a lot of stuttering problems are sound related (IRQ conflicts and PCI latency stuff), however, a considerable number of users are having stuttering even with sound completely disabled. There are rumors of a forthcoming patch, but some people are beginning to get desperate!!
My findings are that the game loads a lot of stuff on the fly (especially explosions and damage effects), so If I make my hard disk access slow (e.g. completely disable the cache), the stuttering can be quite annoying!! Disabling DMA, or 32 bit access also seems to have a nasty effect, and I suspect that lots of users are experiencing a variant of a similar problem: SLOW HARD DISK ACCESS.
Many users complain the simulation is faulty since no other games seem to stutter as much, but I honestly think the reason for this is that I don't know many programs that rely so heavily on dynamic loading of stuff! especially when combat action is hot!!).
Ok, my point is that for what Iīve read so far, you guys are masters of hardware optimization!!! :cool:
What other things that you know, can be done to increase hard disk access throughput? Any ideas are welcome, I intend to post your suggestions over the IL2 forum and refer people to this site of course.
