So, I recently picked up an HD 4850.... It seems the average OC for this card is anywhere from 690/1050-725/1150 on stock cooling. I haven't been able to get even the smallest stable OC, even though I haven't seen temps reach even 60 Celsius, even under load.. I'm basically limited to 650/1050, though I still sometimes get the VPU recover @ these clocks... The only true stable clocks seem to be 625/993 (default)
I'm 99% sure there is some other problem with my setup, other than the card. I've flashed the BIOS voltages up to 1.158(I set all voltages for 2d/3d to this amount), which is the max soft-increase for this card. The only thing I can think that might be the problem is a software problem, or a PSU problem.
I've also used drivercleaner, reinstalled 8.11 Catalyst drivers after the flash, have my fan turned up manually to 100% at all times...
Below are my system specs.
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L
CPU: Intel E2220 Dual core OC'd @ 3.1
RAM: 2 x 2GB DDR2 800
GPU: Visiontek HD 4850 (currently stock but this is the problem)
HD: 300GB basic HD.
PSU- 450W, not sure of the manufacturer/details (I can get them if this may be an issue)
also, 4-5 case fans and a few LED case lights
Looking for any advice on how to up these clocks... Can't figure out what the problem is, I know this card has a lot of potential.

Have you tried the 8.10 drivers? I found them to let my overclock my HD4850 to the max limit ATi Overdrive lets me to then jumping to 8.11 I can't overclock at all with out VPU recovery errors.

Interesting, I also have a new card that I installed with 8.11's and haven't been able to overclock either without VPU recovery errors...

So, I checked on my PSU.. please let me know if this is enough... I read somewhere that 450 is more than enough, if it's decent... not sure if this one is.

I managed to OC to 640/1100 from 625/993 and have gotten stable results.. I was hoping to get the Core higher, but I can't get 3dmark06 to complete with 650/1100 even. I can get 660/993, but it doesn't seem like the results are as good as 640/1100.

I'll give this a shot tonight... I've been using 8.11 and have recently tried the drivers with the 'hotfix for stability'.. Not sure what version of drivers those were.
My 2 visionteks don't OC very well at all. I got one when I build the system, its from the first batch released and it OC's to 650/1070 before taking a dump on me. I picked up another Visiontek in 1st week of October and that card in solo will do 690/1115. However in CF setup if I have them OC'd to different values I get lots of vpu recovery or full out graphical crashes.
Im sure part of it is heat related since the reference coolers Visiontek uses arent very good, but I cant seem to find motivation to spend $60+ for a pair of solid CF compatible coolers.

I think the minimum PSU required for a HD4850 is 450watt so you should be okay for running stock or a mild OC.
I have read the there was an issue with Power Play since the 8.10Hot Fix drivers, but that only affected Over Clocking programs like RivaTuner, whether it might have sometime to do with the fact that I can't overclock now is a possibility
Let us know how you get on with the 8.10's :p
