I would like to get a HSF for my 4850 (see sig). I was about to grab an Accellero S1R2, but decided I would prefer one which vents the exhaust outside the case the like the HIS IceQ4 cooling solution.

Anyone have a suggestion?

As far as aftermarket cooling goes, you won't really find very many HSFs that vent hot air out the back of the case. Most of them are going to recirculate it through the inside of the case.

Yeah, haven't seen that many. Best thing is get a decent heatsink and build a small vent system out of a few 80mm fans and zipties.

I did find this, (http://www.frozencpu.com/products/5271/vid-76/Vantec_IceBerq_6_Premium_VGA_Cooling_Kit_-_Universal.html?tl=g40c21s65) don't know how well it would handle a 4850 though.

Don't bother, just checked out the vantec site, only compatible with up to the x1900.

I'm guessing that won't fit a 4850 since they only claim it supports up to X1900. If it supported 3800 series I should go gold though I think.

There is a cooler. I even had a review for it but my site is going through revisions. It's a GREAT cooler.

And here it is at Sidewinder:

$30. You have to get VRM heatsinks though. It kept my over-clocked 4850 below 50 at load, was REALLY quiet, exhausted out the back and looks cool as hell. It keeps my friend's over-clocked 4870 below 55 load and is still quiet.

Nice! Was it you that did the forum review?

Stupid question... do I really need VRM heatsinks and if so where do I get them? I didn't see them mentioned in any of the reviews.

If ATI/AMD (a profit driven corporation) thought it was necessary to spend capital in installing a heatsink over the VRM's, then you can safely assume that those components need cooling.

Even with heatsinks on my 8800GS, the VRMs are the hottest part of the card.

So where is a good place to get VRM heatsinks?

Anybody like the Thermalright HR over Accel s1v2 for their 4850 instead?

I'm using the TR HR-03 on my 4850 with a 120mm fan. All I can say is it's awsome :) Don't forget to add some sinks on the ramchips and the rear power regulators. These get extremely hot!

Where did you get all the sinks required to put on the rams chips? Also why did you go with the Hr-03 over the Accel? Have you tried the Hr-03 without the 120mm fan?

that cooler is always better then the s1 performance wise on any card it fits on. However the main advantage of the s1 is cost so people usually go for it over thermalrights more expensive alternative.

There's one downside to the Akasa cooler that I've only seen mentioned in one user review: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1351940 Apparently the fan bulges a bit and can block part of the next slot for longer cards. I was going to try it instead of a TT Duorb but without being certain on this issue I didn't want to risk it.

I didn't have any luck with the Akasa on my 4870. I was getting load temps of 66c in a well ventilated case. So unless your friend was running in an ambient of 50f, I doubt the Akasa is able to keep his under 55c

But for a 4850, it should be a decent cooler. Anything above that, kiss performance bye bye.

Why would you bother with it on a 4870? I thought the stock fans on those are quiet, although they too allow the temps to get kind of high. What were your temps with the stock cooler? (the thread you linked doesn't seem to come up)

I had xtra ramsinks from other projects. Never had the Accel so I cannot comment on it's performance over the HR-03. I did, however, used the HR-03 on a X1800XT which run extremely hot and I was amazed on how well it cooled that furnace of a card, thus why I kept it. Yes I tried the sink without the fan on the 4850. Let's just say for my personal preference I like my temps lower than 45c idle and 60c loaded. Thus is why I use the fan.

I can't stand the fan on my 4870 (ASUS model) to go above 40%. The temps are alright, nothing I am impressed with though. I usually get about low to mid 60c on the core depending on my ambient.

Simply looking for a way to cool the 4850 without using a fan (passive cooling) so I am searching for the best heatsink to do the job.

Just reporting back, the akasa cooler wrked quite well, but as suggested is rather short and does not cover the VRMs. I picked up some RAM heatsinks from my local Frys for ~$7. My card is much quieter and cooler now. I have it mildly OCd with no voltage mod and I can't get it over 50c fully loaded. When I get it Vmoded I'll report back with temps.
