hi there
i current have an ati x1650pro
but since i cant play GTA IV ( :bang head :p )
i've decided to upgrade, my friend had the 8-series a few years ago and i always wanted one!

but which "one" would you recommend?

the 8800GT/8600GT, i dont know the internal differences :p

(for game play, usually on a 1280x1024 res. )

thanks!

Definitely an 8800GT or a 9800GT.

They have 112 stream processors and the 8600GT only has 32 stream processors.

It might be a little more money for a 8800/9800GT but it will future proof your computer at least an extra year or two over what a 8600GT would do.

I would take the 8800GT. I got one, runs great. Good value. but the card is becomming rather old?, dont know, maybe look around at some charts, and check prices. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/graphics-cards,1.html one of many. :)

8800GT it is!!
also - psu, ive got about 3 HDD, nothing else major running from it, a core2duo, blah blah

it says its a 500w - its not generic, cos my bro gave it to me new, would that be enough power?

coolermaster RS-500-ASAA

The CM RS-500 is rated at 30 amps on the 12v rails. the 8800 GT's recommendation is for a 400 watt PSU with a minimum of 22 amps on the 12v. So it should be fine.

You will cry tears of joy when you see how much better the 8800GT is. (I upgraded from similiar to what you're upgrading from.)

i had an 7300GT previously
not a drastic improvement, but bigger number :D

just out of interest, is that a big difference between the 8800GT and GTS?

i have the 8800 GTS 320 mb and I've been able to play any game Ive wanted with high specs. I was looking at evga's B stock and it was $89

8800GTS(512mb)>>>9800GT>8800GT

I upgraded from Intel Extreme(*****) Graphics to then Radeon 9250, 3 years later to onboard 7025 5 months after that to 8800gt; the difference is ridiculous.

And if by any means you wish to still stay with an ATI card, go for an HD4850. They're about $50 USD more expensive than a 8800GT though.

You do know that 9800GT is a 8800GT with a different name right? there are no performance advantages.

8800GTS(512mb)>9800GT=8800GT

<3 my 8800gt , tho she is getting a bit old now :( I think Empire total war Maxed out at 1680x1050 will kill her and or force me to upgrade.

Also don't diss the 8600gt , I bought 2 for 20 bucks each over the blackfriday weekend, they are great cards for a 2nd dedicated monitor to watch movies on.

Actuall the 8800gt is probably a smidge better or the same as a 9800gt. id go with the 9800gt as it might be a little bit more future proof :)

+1 for a 8800GTS 512-Mine screams, especially with a nasty overclock ;) Im getting around 15,000 in 3dMark, some ppl's SLI'ed cards are in that range.

2 8800gt in sli can actually have better performance than a 280 in some games. I think twin 8800gt cards (for mid sized resolutions) will be ok for another year and a half.

OK, lemme ask you experts a couple questions. I’m gathering items for a new build (e8500 – DFI) and the only item I haven’t decided on is the graphics card. I’m not a serious gamer and may not appreciate the best cards if I had one. CoD is intriguing and very nice but graphics certainly isn’t an area that I’m knowledgeable about.

My son plays a lot and just built the same I’m building but with a PNY 9800GTX+ ($159 after MIR) and a great price. It’s very nice but I don’t have the eye to distinguish the details that top cards can give. So what are my options for a graphics card that would be suitable for me? You can see I’m using now in my sig (don’t laugh :p).

I have nothing against ATI, I just want to stay with Nvidia for this new build. Cost isn’t a primary factor but if they are “even,” it could make the difference. No SLI. I will overclock the CPU but not the GPU.

8800 series?
9800 series?

Aren't the 8800 series rather dated now?

9800GT?
9800GTX?
9800GTX+?

To be honost, I don't know the difference between most of those cards. All I can say for sure is that my card has been running great for a year now, and I still don't need to upgrade yet.

With that being said, I found this a few days ago, and I think it might help you a bit.

BigSurprise,

That's a perfect comparison and forgive me for thinking the (your) 8800 series is "dated." Obviously that statement is about the farthest from the truth as I could get. What I need to do is choose what would work best for me and is the best bang for the buck.
