View Full Version : Is a 4670 a sizable step up from dual 7800GTs in SLI?

So I just got my shiny new monitor, and the performance is no good at its native 1920 x 1080 resolution on Team Fortress 2. I already have a 4670 on order, but I've had strong thoughts of having it sent back (without opening it). Would I receive a considerable boost in FPS on TF2 (which is all I really play) with a 4670 over my dual 7800GTs in SLI? Would I probably have to put my video settings at 'medium' for it to play smoothly with my native res? Thanks.

Well a 4670 is middle of the road card, its good but don't know if it compares to the SLI performance. 4850/4870 would might be a better guess for the ball park in speed wise.

Do you know if TF2 takes good advantage of SLI? I know some games aren't optimized for it.

TF2 takes advantage of Crossfire yes. But at that point isn't it cheaper to get 1x 4850 over 2x 4670's? As well if games aren't CF then it can still use the full power. There is certain points when 2x cards is ideal, not sure it is at the middle of the product stream.

DO NOT Xfire 2 4670!
why do people Xfire 2 low /mid range cards when the performance can often be beaten or tied witha single card....
just get a single 4850
the 4670 is mid range and wont be a jump up from SLI 7800's i dont think.

I think what he was asking is if a _single_ 4670 would outperform the SLIed 7800gt's, not a CFed 4670. At least thats how i read it.
I dont think you'll see better performance out of the 4670 vs the dual 7800gt's, if there was it wouldnt be much. If its in your price range, find a decent 4850 512mb. Its based on the new 770 architecture, which the 4670 is not, and is a great card, especially when you can find them for under $200.

Oh duh wasn't thinking of it that way. Not sure in that case how it would perform. Sure someone in the nVidia side has performance tests of TF2 with some 7800GT action though.

i personally doubt that a 4670 will outperform SLI 7800GTs. As stated, get a hd4850 if you want an upgrade.

No, the 4670 is for HTPC's and extremely low end desktops with low resolution monitors.
Get the 4850 ;)

Yeah, I originally ordered the 4670 because I intended to use it strictly for my HTPC. Unfortunately for me, I've just recently gotten addicted to TF2. :)
Anyway, isn't the 4850 near the $200 range? Yeah, I can't really afford to shell out that much for a video card now. Besides, the rest of my computer is on the low-end, so I'd probably be better off starting a new build from scratch.
I get 200+ fps in CSS with everything maxed and when I am done it will go in the htpc!
