Any recommended fans/heatsinks etc to cool down my ATI Radeon, also is there any information available on how to 'best' do it?

Thanks.

Seen a few copper chipset coolers around, one of them was an orb style, but I don't think it was a thermaltake...

Also, the thermaltake crystal orb seems to do well with video gpu's...

Get some ramsinks too, and some artic silver epoxy.

You might get some extra performance out of your stock cooler if you take it off, lap it, clean the tape off it and the gpu, and reinstall with some artic silver epoxy.

Interestingly enough, I didn't have any artic silver epoxy when I redid the hsf on my gf2mx. I used the stock heatsink (which was pretty decent), lapped it, and added a 40mm fan to it.

The pins on heatsink for the video card will hold the heatsink on there, but mine didn't seem to give much pressure. So in addition to the pins I used a tiny dab of, of all thigns, wood glue on each corner of the gpu, plus asII...I then put a wieght on the hsf and let it set for a few hours...works fine for me...

Might wanna try using some nylon bolts and nuts to hold the hsf onto the gpu...the better the hold the better the cooling.

Thanks. Welcome To The Forums:beer:

We have been talking about this in the co0oling section. Just click on this (http://forums.overclockers.ws/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58515) & have a read.

Thanks ;-)

Figured that it was better to put in the Video/sound Card sections, as I supposed they were for cooling/overclocking of video cards, (can you even oc a sound card?..) well, someone will surely make a SB 16 PCI -> Audigy mod or something,

Anyway; I have a read and now I only need to find a damn shop to sell me all the l00t I need to do this. ;)

Instant, You posted in the right section.

Nick musta forgot there was a Vid/Sound card section :)

Setting up my hardware specs now ;-)

So far I've ordered:

ASUS A7V266-E (onboard raid) (VIA KT266a)
AMD Athlon 1800XP
2 x CL2.5 PC2100 DDR SDRAM (it was cheap, i might go for performance after a while)
2 x IBM Deskstar 120 GXP (80GB - for my raid, gonna boot on 30GB ATA100)

Next up I'll have to decide.

Chieftec DA01BLD (Blue Server tower with side-fan & door)
or
Chieftec DA01SLD (Silver server tower with side fan & door)

Yellow or Silver 90CM ATA100 IDE cables.

Devil Inside or Idiot Outside casebadge.

Alpha PAL8045NGH or Swiftech MCX462B (and a pabs fan) cpu fan.

Thermaltake Memory Cooling kit OR thermaltake ACtive Memory coolingkit.

A Thermaltake Crystal Orb or a Thermaltake Blue Orb for my GPU (Radeon R6)

WingFin memory coolers for the gfx cardmemory, hope they fit.

Arctive Silver II Thermal Compound and Arctic Silver thermal Adhesive, or Arctic Alumina Thermal Adhesive & Compound..

Noise Control 370W or Noise Control 300W PSU....

anyone have any recommendations/suggestions for another setup I should use?

Here's a couple suggestions, First go with the Crystal Orb over the Blue Orb..... Crystal Orb is just much better and its only $9.99 (http://www.theoverclockerzstore.com/product.asp?0=211&1=216&3=199)
(An IU cooler is the best but a Crystal Orb is a good choice none the less)

Heres a link to 8 Copper ramsinks for $21 (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/tweakram8pac.html)

Radio Shack sells These ramsinks (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?cookie%5Ftest=1&catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F005%5F007%5F004%5F000&product%5Fid=276%2D1368) for $1.59 ea

Regarding the Active memory cooler, well save the $10 and that'll pay for the Arctic Alumina adhesive for applying the ramsinks. ONLY arctic Alumina should be used on ramsinks in my opinion as its safer than its brother Arctic Silver adhesive.
ps I read that active mem cooler only reduced temps by a degree....So good ventilation in that awesome case your buying wont be an issue.

Actually I posted here and didn't get much of a response.

So I thought I had bet chances of a response in Cooling with all the Cooling Experts!

Thanks for the tips ;-)

I spent some time setting up a tiny webpage with my cooling setup..

http://www.dritt.net/nypc/maskin.htm

So I should use Silver on the cpu and Alumina on the memory?

Is there anywhere I can find information about how to apply the adhesive/goop safely to the different components?

Question.

Should I set up the CPU fan to blow air in, or 'suck' air out?

What abuot the other fans i'm purchasing?

I was thinking about having 1 above the PSU, 1 in the front, and maybe 1 on the side, should I draw air in from the front, through a filter, and suck it out from the back?

And the side fan should suck air out aswell?

I just need to add the "Pinky Public Overclocking Service Announcement" here.

As cool as these mods look, and as much fun as they are to do, they are functionally a disaster since you spend X dollars to get Y performance gain, with is usually Z waste of X+Y=Z

Z is typically less that the amount of money to sell the card and spend the difference on the next fastest card available.

Well, I still need to have

cpu cooler, cpu heatsink, case cooler, case psu, case

which means that i'm spending about 1200 NKR on "fun stuff" and 3500 NKR on "necessary".

Updated my new www.dritt.net/nypc/maskin.htm to reflect this (to the right) ;-)

Ofcourse I could go for a cheaper cooling solution to my cpu, but this way atleast I can overclock a little, and also have a nice quiet system.

Yeah...don't bother with the thermaltake active cooling kit for your RAM...I think of all I've read about it, no one was able to get any better RAM timings or fsb's from it. RAM simply doesn't get hot enough for that little kit to make much of a difference. The heat spreaders do look cool, so if you went for something like that it'd look neat.

RAMsinks would probably offer the best bang for the buck, and you can get them in some pretty cool colors too.

www.arcticsilver.com/instructions

has directions for applying AS2.

As for your fans Alpha HSF's normally have the fan on suck as it works better for their design's (shroud etc) but most have the traditional blow setup, every system is different so try and see which works best for you.

As a general rule of thumb have as much air going in as you have going out, and try to keep steady airflow (don't have fans working against each other) and remember hot air particles rise.

I generally have intakes at the front, exhausts at the back and top, and occasionally (if you want to mod your case) have an intake in the side blowing on your AGP/PCI cards.

A lot depends on your Case setup as well, I mean my case is 1M high:eek: and my temps never go above ambient whereas with a smaller case they were 10C above, depending on noise, case size and other factors you will have to make your decision.

(Let me know if you're willing to put up with the noise....:D )

Otherwise remember the basics and you'll be fine.

Also a good tip is to take the side off your case and put some clear perspecs there, now light an insense stick and place it at the front of the case (not to close we don't want any fires!!!) and watch were the smoke flows, this is a great technique for figuring out Hot spots. But remember sometimes when you add fans the temp goes up because the air flow has been disrupted so always try to keep it nice and steady.

Good Luck

Nick

P.S. Remeber to keep your cables tidy!!!! Great benefactor for better airflow.:p

Well, the tower i'm going for is this:

http://www.microplex.no/rubweb/varer.asp?ARTNR=DA01BLD

So I believe that it should be fairly large enough for my needs;)
(and it has a side fan)

So I should draw air in on front, (through filter) and side (to agp cards) and suck on top/rear.

I am going for a Swiftech heat sink with a pabst fan, i'll try suck/blow and see which gets the most heat out.

All cables are "round" so that should not be a problem. :-)

Thanks for the tips! I'll borrow a digital cam and take some pictures when its done.. And then get some spraypaint to make the front look "correct". =)
