hi all
another this hdd or that hdd question

i've found info on both hard drives.
i'm just buying either drive for more space on my pc. i'm not desperately needing the extra 110gb on the Samsung so i just wanted everybody's opinion on which drive to get.

i understand the 640gb is 2x320gb plates; denser and more reliable, more performance right?

on the other hand, the Samsung has more space, 32mb cache, but 3x250gb plates.

i'm going to exchange my WD 750GB Green Power for one of the above, as it's only spinning at 5400rpm :-/ i feel ripped off.

i do plan on using the drive for OS and programs, as my other Seagate 250gb is just plain slow.

I have the 640 myself and I love it (except for the fact that its almost full, but thats my fault :D )

If you feel like spending more for the 750 then get it. The speed diffrence between the two is not enough to make a 640 worth getting over a 750.

I'd go with the WD 640's. I have one and love it. Best drive I have right now (which I hate to say since I have been a devout hater of WD drives over the years due to bad models). But when I heard the awesome personal reviews, I gave the line a try and only one or two people I have read have had any issues with them.

The Samsung's on the other hand I have heard more then a few complaints and problems. Only depending on how they will be used would the cache and drive speed be a concern. Though, I would tend to believe the drive's rpm's would be a greater factor in day to day use.

A quote from a NewEgg reviewer:

Pros: Some are comparing this drive to the "Blue" WD6400AAKS, and though they are the same size there are differences. The Blue has 16MB cache vs. 32MB. In real life this actually doesn't make a big difference by itself. What the Black gives you to go along with double the cache is two microprocessors instead of one. The Black also has two motor mounts for stability, one on each end of the shaft, whereas the Blue has only one. All in all the differences in performance aren't going to be earth shattering for most every day use. Large transfers and mixed file access will favor the Black, but it isn't by a huge amount.

If you need both 32MB and 7200 rpm, then get this one:

If you want to save a few bucks, get this one:

I use mine mainly for HD movie playback and it has been perfect. Cool, quiet and fast.

1+ for the western digital. There the only drives I use. Never had a problem with one yet.

Hey, go with the 640 as you already got a 250 thats practically empty :), just make sure that you dont get jibbed into buying another Green power piece of Cr@p!

ahh, lol. damn, i hate this time zone difference. Blackstar, i could only get either the Seagate Blue Caviar 640GB or the Samsung 750GB, becuase i was exchanging it for my stupid Green Power WD 750GB. it's a 'proper' 7200rpm drive now :p
i chose the Samsung for the extra space over the WD, also becuase i couldn't downgrade to a lower-priced hdd. i'll post some HD Tune benchmarks after i get Vista running
