View Full Version : Silly newbie question

Howdy all from the Great Midwest.

Here comes a silly 1st grade question but I'm a newbie so bear with me. So I OC'd my old free C366 on a 440BX-2 Intel board to a mostly steady 549mhz by upping the FSB from 66 to 100mhz. I say mostly 'cuz occasionally it'll hang up while booting. Probably a cooling issue as I need some case fans but the entire deal was free so no biggie if it frys.

Anyway I want to buy a new setup. I was looking at the IWILL KA-266R MBs and they look to be a good deal. I've got several old Celerons sitting around (366,500,600 & 750) and would like to be able to use one until I can afford a "real" CPU like perhaps an XP Athlon.

Anyway, here's my silly question. Is a Socket A the same thing as a Socket 370?

In other words which MB can I buy that'll use my current Socket 370 Celerons and then be upgradeable to the newest/bestest/fastest CPU in the future (Athlons?)? If this isn't possible what's the best/fastest/coolest CPU that'll fit in a 370 MB, and which MB is a good one to buy for that route?

Or, conversely, if I buy that KA-266R MB now, what's the cheapest low-end CPU (I mean less than $100) that'll work in it until I can afford the real good stuff?

Thanks for your patience with a dumb newbie.

I'm sorry but i think its not possible..

there is no way that you can have intel and amd processors work on the same board. i say wait till you can afford the new XP athlon and get it all at the same time.

For some clarification, Socket 370 is for Intel processors. Socket A is for AMD processors. And never the twain shall meet. They are not compatible.

If you want to go with a Socket A board, you could probably run a Duron or low-end T-bird for under $100, probably around 800 or 900MHz. And most Socket A boards will still work with an XP processor, with just a BIOS flash.

When looking for a board, know what you're looking for. Some chipsets run better than others. Do some research, read through posts here, read through reviews on other websites. We have forums specifically for AMD motherboards, Intel motherboards, AMD processors, and Intel processors, in the event you have more specific questions. And be sure to use the "Search" feature before you ask a question. Typically, you'll find that your question has been asked before (possibly a few times before) and has already been answered. A little bit of searching will find your answer. If all else fails, post a question! We're here to help.

And we do prefer that posts be put in the proper forums, but you're new here, so we tend to cut some slack. It's always good to see new members with interest in what's going on.

Look for a KT266A, AMD 760, or SiS 745 based Socket A board. These will support:

Duron Spitfire 600->900
Duron Morgan 1000->1200
Athlon Thunderbird-B 700->1400
Athlon Thunderbird-C 1000->1400
AthlonXP 1500+(1.33GHz) +

Also support for the next set of AMD CPUs - Thoroughbred Athlons and Apaloosa Durons.

I wouldn't hold my breath for that one. There is no guarantee that they'll use the same socket, and even if they do, there is no guarantee that they'll like the die shrinkage (.18 to .13) or any new instruction sets that they may offer.

You have a point....I though AMD was going to stick with Socket A for a few more years yet?

What will they go to? Hopefully never Slot's again.... perhaps a better socket?

Socket A is the same as Socket 462. Socket 370 is much differnt.

Socket A is good to stick with - allows backwards compatibility

You can get a 700 or 600 MHz Duron (Celeron equivalent if not better) for $29. That should satisfy your needs until you can get a better CPU. Check www.pricewatch.com , and then check the vondor at www.resellerratings.com

Thought 462 was PIV?

Then again, that wouldn't make sense, since my Swiftech MCX462 fits AMD chips, would it.....

So what is the PIV socket designation?

Seems they come in two flavors, Socket 423 and 478...not sure of the differences but info is easy to find...:D

My brother had me put an Athlon 700 in a Slot 1, the CPU survived, the board didn't and made the room have a nice burnt rubber smell.

if u want a processor for that board for under 100 dollars, the athlon tbird 1400mhz is only 99$USD at www.newegg.com.
its the fastest tbird and a good o/c stepping.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like a Iwill KA266R MB is in my future along with a T-bird 1400 all for under $240.

Sa-WEEEET!!! :D

Another silly question, memory. I know that I want the DDR stuff but is there a big advantage to the 2400 & 2700 stuff over the 2100 pieces? All I primarily do is download and mix MP3s & CDs and edit digital photos. I am not a gamer.

TIA guys.

id recommend gettin some good memory from crucial. u may not be thinking about it now, but once u start tweaking, it gets addicting. i never planned on overclocking anything, and now i even o/c'ed my video card(wich gives huge performance gains!)
i originally came to this website just to see what overclocking was.
-and its FUN seeing how much u can get out of ur system.

Okay, I gotta ask. What's with the Hasselhof thing? I lived the 80's and was a huge Knight Rider fan, but good grief, Hasselhof in a speedo? Ewww, that's just wrong. ;)

PC2400 and 2700 will allow you to overclock further without RAM problems. If the $$ isn't too much I would go for 2400 or 2700 If the mobo supports it. This will at least be future proofing for newer motherboards which may use DDR333 RAM.

What speedo? He wore shorts. And in this particular pic, he's wearing a jacket, too.

I've been thinking of swapping my Av, but I've just been having too much fun with Hasslehoff!
