View Full Version : No fan needed to cool Northbridge on Epox 8K7A ??

In my never ending saga of trying to quiet my PC while maintaining good cooling I decided to remove the fan from the heatsink cooling the AMD 761 Northbridge on my Epox 8K7a. You'd be surprised how much noise that little fan actually makes. I left the stock heatsink intact.

To my surprise my system continues to be stable at my current speed of 1350 Mhz (9 x 150 FSB). I do have good airflow through the case with case temp about 1-2C above room temp. The heatsink might be getting a little air indirectly blown on it from a home made 80mm blower fan which blows across my Gefore2 Ultra. After the PC has been running for a while I've touched the Northbridge heatsink and it feels only warm.

Has anyone else tried this with the same stable results? Maybe my FSB is still too low to be affected by the reduction in cooling? I don't plan on taking the FSB any higher due to the lack of a 1/5 divisor on the 8K7A even though I know my Crucial DDR can take up to 178 Mhz at least.

I run a passive heatsink on my northbridge that I yanked from and old passive P200MMX proc. Works better than the original fan. The heatsink is cold.

If the heatsink is just warm and not hot then the chipset is fine.

On mu AK11 the northbridge fan doesnt make that much noise if I can remember correctly. I also put a hs on the southbridge for some reason I think it looks better:D

A SB heatsink would look neat, but they don't make enough heat to matter or the manufacturers would put one on.
