i did a quick format to c: and installed windows xp. on this old hewlett packard computer the hard drive is partitioned as c: and d: (windows xp is on this drive). i do a chdsk on d: by right clicking the drive -> properties -> tools -> check now -> check the two boxes then restart. everything is fine, but when i do this on c: it gets stuck on stage 5. chdsk is verifying free space (stage 5 of 5) ... 0 percent completed. so i leave it on overnight and when i come back its on 5%. this drive is 160gb, whats making it take so long or get stuck? do you think the drive is failing?

It is probably trying to reallocate (a) bad sectors. As long as there are available sctors it could finish but it does take time. Overnight is a really long time however and it may not be possible, having already reallocated many over it's lifetime. A new drive may make the system much faster if it is very old as the older drives were painfully slow.
