Hi guys, So here is the question I have a 8800gts video card with a HDMI to DVI connector then a HDMI cable to my 42 inch 1080p TV when i play a 1080p iso or mkv am i really watching 1080p? Im using VLC to play the movies. Also does anyone recommend a different media player?
My television tells me what resolution and what not I'm viewing at. Like if I'm viewing high def stuff then the resolution is something like 1900xsomething. Maybe it's an option to see on yours?

If your display settings are showing 1920x1080 @ 60Hz then you're at 1080p on the computer.

Well, if you look under Media/Codec info under the tool menu in the newer version of vlc, one of them will tell you the resolution. If it's 1920x1080, then yes, its 1080p (unless its 1080i.) I forgot what it was for the old version, something under the file menu.
in VLC or windows?

I prefer Media Player Classic Home Cinema edition...or MPC-HC. Not just for videos, but for music as well.

I prefer Media Player for audio files and use PowerDVD8 for videos, one of the few players that supports BlueRay. I mount my ripped flicks with Daemon tools and play with PDVD, works also with DVD-A discs as well.
My display shows the input type and quality whenever I change inputs or sources; 1080p, 1080i, 720p, etc.
