pIII cpu overclock

first off i had fun with my computer it would crash sometime that even the BIOS would not run nothing it happen a 3 time a dealer thought it was a motherborad but end up replaceing the chip a 433 Mhz to a pIII 800 Mhz or what was suppose to be a 800 Mhz, i look in the bios he has it over clock by 100-> 133 Mhz to make it a 800 Mhz, if the overclock was disabled it a a 600 Mhz, now that not normal is it ??????????? to over clock by 200 Mhz, so it not ready a 800 cpu is it ????????? i got short change i feel maybe and maybe not ????????

a side question it a cpu stop work for any reason, could you still get in to bios, as my computer when it stop it all stop i got nothing no sound or window no bios nothing, and ontil now no one fique it out maybe so is a cpu connect to the bios in any way::mad:

Yes, it is quite normal. That CPU has a locked multiplier of 6. 6x100 = 600. Now, if you raise the FSB to 133, it's 133x6 = 800. No, it is not really an 800MHz CPU, it is a 600MHz CPU overclocked... and to sell an overclocked CPU as one that isn't overclocked is deceitful and illegal.

Side note: If your CPU is overclocked, that might be why your computer doesn't want to boot up sometimes. Keep it at it's 100MHz default setting and see if it keeps happening.

Although, it's still a much better deal than the 400 he had in there....even at 600. I would call him and ask him questions about overclocking and the SOB's that overclock and sell (without properly informing the consumer). If nothing else, I'll bet ya could scare the guy.

You could use the FrequencyId utility from Intel to make sure the CPU is running at the correct speed. if it's not, then it will tell you if the cpu is overclocked. If the dealer sold you an overclocked CPU you have the right to sue or ask at least for the real chip for no extra price. This falls under misrepresentation and is a crime punishable by law.

hi found the prgram but i still do not understand why it has to be over clocked when the intel prgram tell me it ok, BIOS or motherborad can not take it maybe ?????

Do you have SiSoft Sandra??? Maybe that can shed some light on this. If you don't, I think the download section of www.cnet.com (http://www.cnet.com) has it. That might be able to tell you more as well. I think maybe the Proc ID program just sees the 133Mhz bus and assumes everything's OK.

I was posting a reply to something different. I was just telling you how to make sure that you weren't tricked into buying an overclocked processor. Why the bios won't load up i don't know.

PS The intel cpuid prog is the ultimate source for deciphering the real speed of the Intel CPU. If it says that it's a 600/66 then it's a 600/66. If it says it's overclocked to 800/133, then it's overclocked to 800/133. The intel prog read info directly from the CPU which has the info about itself as to it's correct speed.
