Newegg.com has the Maxtor MX4D060H3 60 gig 5400 rpm HDD for a mere 90 dollars. I was thinking of purchasing one for file backup and the like, and posibly some web serving. I havent heard much at all about this drive and was wondering if you guys had any experience with this particular model? I looked around on the web for reviews, but could not find any.

Performance is really not that required. It will probably mostly be used to store files. All I ask is that its reasonably quiet, and dependable.

Thanks for any opinions!

It depends on your wants and needs. For me, I'd rather get a 20GB hdd at 7200 rpm, but if you need more storage space and you don't mind the slow hdd speed, then your needs are different than mine. For my use, 20-30 gb is plenty, and you can get one of those for $90 at 7200, 2mb cache- look at seek time too.

Maxtor also makes ata-133 drives, you know, and they don't really cost any more than the ata100 units. Something to think about.

They'll all store your files!

If you want quiet, you may want to look at some reviews of the Seagate Barracuda IV. I have a few, and they are quiet. I've never owned a Maxtor, so I can't give you a comparison from personal experience.

Thanks guys. I already have an IBM 60 gig 7200 RPM drive, and I can vouch on its quality. Do you really think its worth 20 bux for another one? Now that I think about it, I might just get it.

Funny thing since I think about it...you may like this...I bought 2 7200rpm ATA100 UDMA 5 Maxtor 60gig...Well, I have the KR7A-RAID board and to my surprise the ATA100s operate at ATA133 UDMA 6!!!!...they came that way. I don't know why...I have no idea why...all I know is I felt like I stole them. :D Then again...if you love Maxtors that much, you can do what I did and CHOP 'EM MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA:cool:

Head over to my hard drive post in the Alternative Modding section to see the fate of Maxtors I buy.:burn: :burn:
