I just bought an old P2/300 mhz with 256mb SDram to play around with and wanted to know if Windows 2000 would run ok on it? If not, what OS would you recommend? I plan on doing a Dual Boot with Windows/Linux.
Thanks

windows 98 would probably run best.
but then again the fairly large amount of ram could help out the slow processor speed.
win 2k would probably run but i'm guessing for best performance 98 or 98se would be your best bet.

Had a PII 350 with 256MB and Win2K ran fine on it.
Don't expect blazing speed but in the long run, it would run better than Win98 due to better memory management and allocation of resources. Compare it to 98 would win a sprint, but Win2K would get it easy in the mile.

At work we use 2k on several celly 300mhz with 64mb and it runs well.
the actual mim specs are like P133, 64MBram, 2G drive(650) for install

In may opinion w2k is the better choise... it's more stable that w98, but only if you dont play to play games on it... so its strictly for bussines... ;)
if you can donwload also both of the service packs for w2k...
enjoy ;)
The school wants 2k on all its machines (using 95 right now -yuk!), but they all have 32MB or 64MB of RAM so we would need a RAm upgrade as well.
If it runs ok with 64 then I'll suggest it to the network administrator.
