I got a Dell e1705 that has a Hitachi 80gb 1.5gb/s sata HD w/ 7200rpm
Chipset is : i945PM
Southbridge is : 82801GHM ICH7-M/U
Questions is if my laptop is compatible for a 3gb/s sata 250gb or so like a Western digital scorpio HD?

Is a 3gb/s sata HD backwards compatible to 1.5gb/s sata?

Looking at Intel's datasheet (http://www.intel.com/assets/pdf/datasheet/307013.pdf);
The mobile chipset is SATA-I.
SATA is backwards compatible, thus you can plug in a SATA-II, SATA-I drive and the interface will function (will operate at SATA-I).
I upgraded my 100GB SATA-I to a 200GB SATA-II; works fine!

Good to know. Thanks.
80gb just don't seem as big as it used to be.
Any suggestions on which HD would be a good choice?
200gb and up. Low noise and vibrations is a plus with decent benchmarks.

I'm running one of these (http://www.mwave.com/mwave/externalTracking.asp?TrackingID=pageInfo&scriteria=AA74066) on my M700 with excellent results. Essentially silent, no perceptible vibration. Feels very snappy; sorry no benches at this time...

check the manual though, some will require a jumper to be put into place. this would then limit the drive to the 1.5G SATA standard and not try to run at 3G. would be the difference of the drive working and not working..

I paid $180 for the 200GB version back in 2006. I want to cry.
I love the drive though, rock solid! It should be plug and play too (jumper-wise)

WD3200BEKT/BJKT is a good all-around performer.
The 7200.4 from Seagate comes only in 500GB flavour right now but is very good too.
