View Full Version : P4 + DDR = Not too Shabby
With the launch of the northwood core the P4 can finally show some respectable numbers, albeit with a hefty price tag (don't forget the days when a 600MHz Athlon cost $650 though). To offset the high price of the chip there are probably some folks out there looking at the DDR option. I was curious myself so I picked up an Asus P4S333. This board has official support for PC2700 ram just now starting to show up. I thought some of you might be interested in how it fares. I'm still waiting on a stick of Corsair PC2700 to show up, so in the mean time I gave it a test drive with a stick of Crucial PC2100. What I found left me pleasantly surprised. Attached is how the board performed at stock speed with conservative ram timings of cas 2.5, 3, 3, 6 and a memory ratio of 3/5. If this is any measure of things to come we have a lot to look forward too. After running this board for a couple of days I noted only one major problem for overclockers. The pci/agp bus speed cannot be fixed as with several i850 boards. This means the 1/4 divider does not kick in until you reach 133 fsb - which is not likely with the current batch of northwoods.

sweet, yeah that pci thing is a real problem...after 125fsb it gets tough unless you hagve nice hdd...
There seems to be some confusion surrounding this setup, as I've received quite a few emails. First of all this is an SiS 645 P4 chipset. Some emails asked me why I didn't try a Via KT266A. Secondly this board allows the memory to be run asynchronously from the front side bus. So the cpu bus can be at 100, while the ram is at 100,133, or 166. Some people thought I was claiming to have a P4 running at 166! I guess the last thing is this is a 1.7gig P4 willy - but that has no bearing on the memory scores.

look what this guy got with his northwood 1.7 ghz:
3dmark2001 with northwood 1.7 (http://gamershq.madonion.com/compare2k1.shtml?2467819)
He must be using some good cooling. From what I've heard the sub 2GHz northwoods were binned leftovers from the ones that didn't make the grade. Seems unllikely that one would hit those speeds without some mods - perhaps a vapochill.

here's a better one and now currently 3dmark2001 #1 spot
new top score with a 2.0 northwood (http://gamershq.madonion.com/compare2k1.shtml?2492736)
Hello,
How are your experiences with the P4S333? This because I ordered a Gigabyte, but think now about change my mind and taking this 333.
Did just find this "..While testing other SiS 645 boards, we were able to run the FSB at around 133MHz, but the ASUS P4S333 would just stall over 124MHz. "...
http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=review&dId=156&dPage=5
What the ... that means? I want overclock my 1.8 to 2.4 with 133!...:-)
You talked about dividers missing; I not understand lot of this stuff, but this Gigabyte I'm talking about has some special features; are they what you mean/miss at the Asus Board?
Or is the advantage to be on the 2700/333 path maybe greater than those pci-deviders of the Gigabyte and the 133 onboard-RAID? (to the P3S333 i would add a 100-RAID card).
Can you (or someone else here!) have a look at this Gigabyte I ordered? It's very new, but not understand why its not 2700/333... When by the way did the P4S*33 came out, is it probably newer than the Gigabyte?

This would be cool! Thanks a lot & cheers Max
I sorta like P4 w/ Rambus as I heard DDR slowing down the P4 abit..!

Yes, P4S333 is out, I'm still testing my 8IRXP, looks speedy, I'm getting my PC2700 on Monday or somethin' and I will post the results by then... DDR seems to be faster.. IMO

Not from what I'm testing, I'm done yet though, RIMM seemed to be too picky though with O/Cing!

Hi Pacino,
thanks for reply - sympathic! Yes i ordered my Gigabyte board 2 weeks ago, but it just did not arrive and i'm inpatient:), like with girls?...:-), and asked my shop for alternative. As bad side I'll loose the sympatic onboard 133RAID and USB 2 (buy a separate 100RAID card, no 133 around as i see, why?..).
But there are not really big differences between 266/333, as it looks like from following tests i found now:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/mainboards/sis645-boards/
Did find there also the infos about the pci-dividers of that Asus333 board (1/4 after 133hz), and the max. hz reached there was 156Hz!!! (so, each test different...:-).
As all experience on this board the 1.8 northwood can easy be clocked with 133 to 2.4, so i not have to worry about this missing deviders below 133, right?
But with this speed in 2 weeks the 333 will be out the same, whatever you order it holds max. 2 weeks :-)
Have a nice weekend Max

hi, i am new to this forum, but not to overclocking ;)
my old maschine was a celeron2 566@952, he was very stable for almost 2 years. so i trust in intel ;)
now i have bought a gigabyte ga8irxp board and a pentium 4 2,2A with swiftech mcx472 (delta fan) the max clockspeed i got was 2,75ghz with 127mhz fsb and 1,8v vcore... but i want the 22*133...
another problem is that after restarting i had to turn off the computer an turn it back on to get him boot, because after a reboot it hang... very strange
if anybody has a clue to solve my problems...
p.s. the temps were around 36-40 degree celcius @2,75ghz

hmm... i read that the northy can take up to 64 degree celcuis...
an the swiftech holds him at about 40-47 on full load @1,77...
i think the problem is at the board, because it won't reboot when i set it to 1.825V, sometimes i have to reset the bios (remove the battery ;)) to get him started again....
another question: how loud is the vapochill case????
