Hello all,
Can my Pentium d820 run smp while running a gpu2 client with an 8600gts?
I figure that the 8600gts will not be to stressful on the cpu (especially with the new drivers), so most of one of the cores will be free and the other will be totally free.
I was hoping that I could get a few hundred ppd extra that way.
If I need to I guess I could just run a regular system tray client on the non used core but that seems like a waste.
This computer is mainly a back-up / computer for friends to lan game with when they come over (think L4d with 4 people in the same room. I just need 2 friends w/ good laptops) . I would like to put it to work when it is not being used. (95% of the time)
Thank you
My 3.0ghz X2 that hosts a 2900XT gets about 580ppd on XP running smp behind the gpu, single core client gets about 475ppd max on those 905 point units so I think SMP is worth it... just try it out and check FAHmon to see if it will complete the hardest units before the deadline.

Sounds like i should give it a try. I have no idea how to use FAHmon but I guess I need to learn. Everyone keeps saying to use it.
Thank you.
Also I am sure that your x2 outperforms my Pentium D by a large margin, but I still think judging from your results that it would be worth it.
It's pretty easy to configure fahmon, I'm sure there is a guide but basically just download, install, run it and download new projects when it asks-- right click on the white space and hit add new client, point it to the main folder your folding program is in, and you're ready to go.
You shouldn't fold SMP if can't make the preferred deadlines. When you fail to make it, the WU is reissued to someone else, duplicating the work. FAHmon will show deadline info. If you can't make the SMP deadlines, it's not such a loss since there are some pretty good bonus unicpu WUs out there (they're good on a E6600 anyway, 600+ ppd @ 2.5GHz on one core). With the new drivers (180.60 or 180.70), I'll switch the E6600 to SMP + GPU.

Are those deadlines looser for the bonus WUs than for the SMP ones?
I know that the cpu will be fine for the gpu client, but I just wanted to maximize work/ppd
Deadlines on Uni CPU bonus WUs are weeks long, while preferred deadlines on SMP WU vary from 1.25 to 6 days.

so you are suggesting that I run a bonus cpu client on Core 0 and gpu2 on core 1?
That sounds good to me. I do not want to slow down my gpu2 client. It will already only be bringing in around 1500ppd. If I could even get 300ppd out of the other core that would make a much more respectable number. 1800 sounds pretty good to me.
I also hear the the 8600gts overclocks very well for F@H.
If I could get this machine bringing in 2000 ppd I would be quite happy.
I just worry about the heat of the gpu. I have 6 120mm fans in this case so I think it will be ok.

Is it just luck of the draw or will they be given to dual and Quad core's?
I have the box checked to Allow large WU's ...Anything else needed?
I started out with a 4439 and 4441 both at 225points 234ppd on Quad 204ppd on a E6600.
I don't have any of my home rigs folding Uni cpu WUs. I'll check the setup on the E6600 at the office and see in the morning. I think it's folding -advmethods/big.

In that case I'll need to switch to the console from the systray, I thought the box for big units would do the same thing.
If I remember right, the Additional Client Parameters Box can't be used in the systray client, but maybe that's changed.
EDIT: Ok according to client direction's I can put the -advmethods flag in there.
Additional Client Parameters : This is where you can save the frequently used flags like -verbosity 9 or -advmethods.
I don't have any systray clients either. However, you can edit client.cfg and change the client type to 3 or run the client with the -config flag and answer yes to accept WUs using advanced methods (I think you can do this even with the systray client, but am uncertain). Another option is to add the flag to the target line of the shortcut. "-advmethods" as a flag has been unnecessary since version 5.04 of the client added the selection to the config setup and client type 3.
