Ok, here's the deal... I've been looking into water-cooling for my Athlon XP 1800+. I've been reading alot of posts on it and seeing that some people achieve the same temp's on air. Can someone lead me in the right direction please? I want it to be quite and cool very well when overclocked. Thanks.

Quiet, cooled and overclocked by air only?

That comes to mind, but that is no where near quiet (Ear plugs are actually offered on the order page). You could go for a similar setup like that but using all quiet, low-CFM fans.

That's the problem with quiet air cooling, there is little cooling going on because of little CFM being produced.

Water is the quietest and a good start if you want to OC.

Hrm.. ok. Think I will go water for sure now. I wouldn't mind the noise at all... but i'm sure the other people in my house would appreciate it

Well, thanks... oh, one more question for anyone who reads this : In using an Eheim 1250 - do I need a reservoir.. or is it optional?

You always have a choice between resevoir and an inline setup, unless the pump is non-submerisble, then you have to go with an inline.

Some debate inline will get you better temps, but I'll stick with my fish tank resevoir, simply because I can control the temp of the resevoir easily and I don't have to worry about air bubbles.

The reason I ask is because I think the cases I have seen with the Eheim pumps have no reservior. I would like to use a reservior so I could make the water colder... i'll check to see if it's submersible... Thanks Vash.

I have both water and air cooled...I say go with what you want...if you have the berries to be a watercooler then go for it...it will work out best for you. :D

You can use a res with an eheim either with the pump submerged or with the pump inline. I use an inline eheim plus res - makes bleeding easier.
As for making the water coler with a res, how are you planning to do that?

That case looks nice. But 700 is wat to overpriced. the nice aluminum lian li full tower is onlt like 230 or 250. I could make all those holes myself. and the fans don't make that much diffrence.. whew. Maybe I should sell cases. I could make a fortune. lol.

P.S. Vash what happened to your Trigun Avatar. I really liked that one.

I have yet to think this out in it's entirety yet. I was thinking a few IceProbe's maybe.. perhaps just have like a chute atop the reservoir for distilled ice to be tossed down into. Not sure if the chute would be the greatest idea. hehe :D

For 1200 canadian dollars I can get a very good upgrade(Athlon XP) and get extreme peltier + water rig for near 700 dollars canadian.

500 dollars saving + your ears is a good deal.

Why didn't they add the total dBA? ahha

Total = 868 dBa
Almost half the CFM flowing through the case LOL. :D

You could put one hoot (http://www.overclockers.com/tips461/index02.asp) on for less than 50 and get better flow than that whole case.

I am definately biased towards water.:D

You don't need a reservoir but it makes the system easier to fill. I don't think it helps temps at all unless you're using antifreeze.

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken or at least explain.

omg... lol that case looks ghetto, but hey... if it does the job right? That's pretty crazy.. if there was a better way of "hiding" such a beast... well, that wont happen...

Yeah, but I have almost pulled off a Hoot in this case. With all the fans I have in here, the air pushes out the front top of the case all the way out to 9-10 inches, just about 13-14 inches short of what Hoot got with the centrifugal blower, except I didn't have to make any mods except for my 120mm blowhole :D

Using anti-freeze will only INCREASE temps, not help them. Terrible heat transfer properties and very thick compared to water. Yes a res makes the system easier to fill and bleed.

True, antifreeze will raise tems, but it needs a large volume so it has time to rise and lower the temps, even if it effectively raises temps a couple degrees.

ok, instead of starting a new thread, I just thought I would bring this back to the front :)

I have my XP 1800+ @ 1.72GHz and it's @ 37c at load. Will water-cooling get this lower? That is, not using a chiller for the water, just a regular water-cooled setup (res.->wb->rad->res).

ButcherUK

Yes it should, my comparatively poor water setup can cool that sort of load to the low 30s under load.

Water cooling will generally yield lower temps than air cooling if properly set up.
