View Full Version : Did I kill my HDD?

I added two new hard drives the other day, set up RAID 0, and reinstalled Vista. When I got into Vista, it did not have my storage drive listed, so I checked device manager and the disk manager and it was not listed in either place. :(

My motherboard is a piece of crap and doesn't list SATA devices, however the RAID setup utility does, and it DOES list the hard drive. However that is the only thing that recognizes that the HDD is even there. I tried some utilities on a bootdisk and none of them picked it up either, is it dead? :eh?:

Wait -- I'm confused. Are you booting Vista off the array, but then can't see the array from within Vista?

No, I am booting Vista off the array, but I cannot see my third storage drive. I have 2 drives in RAID 0, plus another drive that's all by itself. The third drive is the one I cannot see.

i don't totally understand how raid works, but during the installation, there's a part where it asks you which partition/drive you want to install Vista on yeh? if you partitioned your harddrive to say 40gb and 600gb (i dunno, just as an example) and plan to install Vista in the 40gb partition, you also have to press 'create' on the 600gb partition, or it dones't see it when you start up. i've done this many times as i keep forgetting.

if you mean the drive (non partitioned) isn't seen, i'm not quite sure then.

just a thought :)

Sounds like your storage drive is on the "raid" controller, but not officially part of the array, so invisible.

On many controllers you must add the drive as an array even if it is still just a single drive. Enter the raid bios and add the drive as an array to see if it shows up. The drive is fine.

Like it was never even gone! Thanks so much!
